Low serum adiponectin levels predict an increased future risk for developing asthma in middle-aged women, particularly among smokers, according to a new study. "Adiposity is known to be related to asthma. Although a causal link between adiponectin (a protein produced by adipose tissue) and asthma has been demonstrated in mice, the evidence in humans has been conflicting," said lead author Akshay Sood, MD, MPH, associate professor in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center School of Medicine...

Travel photo of the day: A snow-draped castle

Submitted by Matthew Bentley / UGC
Neuschwanstein Castle in Fussen Germany
Neuschwanstein Castle, a popular tourist draw,?stands?near F?ssen in Bavaria, Germany.
"The castle is amazing architecturally,"?Matthew Bentley told TODAY.com.?"The craftsmanship of stonework and detail of the sculptures is something to see. But the real gem is the artwork inside. You really can understand why the castle was never finished; the costs involved would have been staggering."
A snowstorm had come in that morning, dropping about 2 feet of snow. The park had closed off the main hiking trails, so Bentley took a roundabout route to a bridge where he took this photo. "It was cold enough that the batteries in the camera kept freezing," he said.?"I had to take them out and warm them up, in my pocket, every time the camera would die out."

The Cat-Bird Conflict - ABA Blog
They say that fools step in where angels fear to tread. Well, here I go!
I got another one of those emails where you?re asked to vote for a cause to receive a charitable donation from a major foundation. I honestly hate these things on so many levels. In the first place, it points out how many amazing causes are in desperate need of support. As a volunteer for a couple of non-profits, I really understand that. Who could imagine the lengths we are willing to go to in order to get a bit of financial support! In the second place, these votes typically push conservation efforts to the bottom of the priority list. How can you expect the general public to vote for saving a wetland (known by most as a swamp) when they are looking at pictures of hungry children, dilapidated schools, battered pets and people struggling to overcome illness or disability? And then there?s the cats and the ?trap, neuter, release? programs?
I love cats. A lot of my non-birder friends think it?s strange that someone who cares about birds and conservation could love cats. A lot of my birder friends have no problem understanding it. A recent poll on the Wild Bird magazine website showed that 58% of the respondents had at least one cat. Cat loving and wild bird loving are not mutually exclusive! Our cats and birds fill completely different needs for us. However, there?s no question that there is a conflict, and it?s outdoors.
Even well-fed cats will hunt. Their skill at killing rodents endeared them to many settlers, but they are proving to be too good at it for native birds and animals.
So how do we resolve this conflict? I will confess that I?ve been a convert since about 1990, and as any of you who have had to deal with people who have stopped smoking or quit some other habit, converts can get a little bit evangelical. I used to let my cats go outdoors. I thought it would be cruel to keep a cat indoors. I never liked them catching wild animals and birds, but my last indoor/outdoor cat was not a hunter. (Yes, I really believe that some cats do not kill birds.) I knew, and used, all of the excuses.
In fact, it wasn?t even a love of birds or nature that prompted me to keep my cats indoors. A neighbor trapped my cat! I couldn?t find Rufus for days. For more than a week, I wandered the neighborhood calling his name. I put up posters. I put ads in the paper. I even checked with highway maintenance to see if they?d found his body. I was heart-broken. For some of us, our pets really are more like furry children. After eight days, a much thinner cat with worn claws and foot pads finally came home. It was shortly after this that I found that 14 cats had gone missing in our neighborhood and that a trap had been found in a yard in the middle of the ?no cat zone?. This neighbor didn?t love birds?he loved gardening and hated cats. After, that, I still allowed Rufus outside, but only under supervision. Then I moved. Whew! What a relief it was to be away from such a dreadful neighbor.
At our new house, I kept Rufus on a leash for the first week so that he could get used to his new surroundings. When I finally let him off his leash, he made a bee-line to a neighbor?s yard. I was determined to keep a closer eye on my cat, so I followed, only to find a tin of poison laced with sardines on my new neighbor?s carport floor. Was there no safe place left for a cat? I started hearing horror stories about how people were trapping cats throughout our city and killing them. My blood pressure rose thirty points every time this made the news. The choice was clear. If I loved my cat and wanted to keep him safe, I was going to have to keep him indoors.
After Rufus came Okie and Hobbes--100% indoor cats except on leashes or on a high enough deck that they wouldn?t jump to the ground. And guess what? They were happy, healthy, energetic pets. I was a convert. The number one ?must have? for my next home purchase was a deck that the cats could use and not get to the ground. Did I mention that I love cats? Sam and Mushu followed, and have been indoor cats since I got them. They are also healthy and happy. And Mushu, if given a chance, would kill every bird in my yard. Despite my efforts, there is still about one bird a year that meets its end on my deck.
Mushu, a stray that may have become feral, found a home with an elevated deck fills his desire for trips outdoors.
Pre-conversion, I scoffed at the statistics. The numbers put out by bird protection groups like the American Bird Conservancy and their British counterpart seemed greatly inflated, extrapolated from a highly successful hunting cat. Then I heard a statistic that I didn?t have trouble believing?the population estimate of cats in North America. There are over 100 million pet cats on the continent. If they each only caught one bird a year on average, that?s 100 million birds! And that doesn?t even take into consideration the estimated 40 million feral cats which would clearly take a lot more. I had to concede that this was an issue.
A dead bird on the doorstep is usually an indication of a kill by a well-fed cat.?
While some folks still don?t agree that this is a problem, there are lots of people trying to address this issue, in very different ways. Pet owners are becoming more responsible. More and more of us are keeping our cats indoors, or outside in enclosures or on leads. Some cities are implementing bylaws to license and/or neuter cats and generally make owners more responsible. There are bibs that some owners put on their cats which apparently do prevent them from catching birds, but I suspect the cats wearing them are so humiliated that they probably don?t even want to venture out where anyone can see them. I actively encourage outdoor cat owners who won?t keep their pets indoors to at least keep them in until a couple of hours after sunrise and during the twilight hours when birds are most active. I also remind them that when a cat kills a bird in the spring, there?s probably a nest of babies left starving somewhere out in their neighborhood. You?d be surprised how many people hadn?t considered that.
Cat enclosures are becoming more popular and provide a safe--for both cats and wildlife--outdoor environment. This one even has a long run along the top of the fence. Photo provided by Beautiful World Living Environments.
The feral cat population is a whole other matter. The feral cat protectors (who, for the most part, also like birds), killing the free-roaming cats is not an option. I honestly don?t want the cats killed either. Let?s face it, the problem is the people that let the cats go, not with the cats themselves. They are doing what comes naturally, but unfortunately, they are doing it in a part of the world where the resident species can?t naturally expect them. That?s the crux of the issue. An introduced, very efficient predator is going to wipe out a lot of na?ve natives.
The cat advocates are not happy that these descendents of pets released by irresponsible owners have to forage in the alleys of the city or in the wild just to survive. Enter trap, neuter, release or TNR. The TNR programs are intended to gradually reduce the feral cat population through natural attrition as the reproductive abilities of the cats are limited by neutering. I can find statistics that shows that these programs are working in some locations and not working in others. The ?carrying capacity? of an area (i.e. the number of animals that can survive on the available food resources) is increased by the cat feeding programs that invariably go along with TNR. One un-neutered female can easily make up for any natural attrition in fairly short order. Whatever the success or numbers, cats in the wild will continue to take a toll on birds and small mammals.
Trapped, neutered and not released, Boodah, his mother and one other feral cat are now much loved and happy indoor cats sharing a house with two cat and bird loving humans.
For the most part, I believe that the TNR and cat advocacy groups truly hope that every cat will be a wanted pet. The bird advocates want every cat to be a wanted pet and kept under control. There are more shared objectives here than differences, yet we seem to often find ourselves in heated battles. Trap, neuter, release doesn?t protect the birds, but it?s undoubtedly better than not neutering the cats. It may not be reversing the number of feral cats, but it certainly must be slowing the growth of the feral population.
There?s no doubt that people are a major part of the problem when it comes to bird population issues. We?ve found so many highly efficient ways to kill birds?windows, habitat destruction, pesticides, transmission towers, cars, and cats just to name a few. Of all of these, we may have our greatest opportunity to limit the damage by being responsible for our cats.
So I?m throwing it out there. What can we do as bird advocates to work with the cat advocates to achieve our common objectives? Encourage cat licensing/neutering bylaws? Help cat protection agencies find homes for abandoned pets? Take in a feral cat or two?? Support TNR until we find a better solution? Come on, cat/bird lovers! Let?s figure this one out.

GOP candidates plan Maryland visits
Three Republican presidential candidates ? Rick Santorum, Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich ? are preparing to plant a flag in Maryland ahead of the state's April 3 primary, offering GOP voters here a rare chance to take part in a national political battle.
Local campaign officials said they expect candidates will swing through the state early next week, following Saturday's primary in Louisiana. Maryland, which has 37 delegates to offer, votes the same day as Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin.
"We've been waiting for a long time to get our due attention from the possible next president of the United States," said state Republican Party Chairman Alex X. Mooney. "Maryland matters."
The state's primary comes at an important time for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who campaigned Wednesday in Arbutus. Romney has a significant lead in delegates but has been unable to woo skeptical conservatives.
A national spokeswoman for Santorum's campaign said the former senator from Pennsylvania is planning to visit the state Tuesday, though she provided no details.
Gingrich is also planning a trip to Annapolis on Tuesday, said a state delegate who is leading the candidate's Maryland campaign, and might venture onto the floors of the Maryland General Assembly. National campaign aides have not confirmed that plan.
Del. Warren E. Miller, a Howard County Republican who is co-chairing Gingrich's campaign in Maryland, said he expected Gingrich would arrive in the morning and walk down Main Street to meet with business owners. He said he had also invited Gingrich to the State House.
Gingrich is also expected to attend a fundraiser in Montgomery County, local officials said.
Paul, the Texas congressman, will appear Wednesday at a town hall meeting in Ritchie Coliseum at the University of Maryland, College Park, a campaign spokesman said.
Romney, who dropped out of the running for the nomination in 2008, days before Maryland voted, is the most organized candidate in Maryland. He has amassed a coterie of well-known GOP officials and volunteers.
Twenty-four of 37 delegates in Maryland are awarded by congressional district, meaning that the candidates could add to their delegate count even if they lost the state's popular vote. Ten statewide delegates go to the winner of the popular vote.
Three remaining slots go to party officials, including Mooney.

Yoga For Exhausted Eyes And Strained Vision ? Making Money on ...
So you are forty a thing now, so you realize that the composing on anything keeps acquiring a lot more microscopic? or could that be your fatigued eyes lastly growing older? Oh the horror, while you give in and attempt to discover a stylish set of +1.25 readers for the drugstore.
Now, you?ve got them so you feel it is really excellent at first? right up until your eyes occur to intensely rely upon them, and you have to recollect the place you place them each time you are taking them off, and by the point you are doing uncover them, you do not even get yourself a probability to go through anything you had been attempting to that entire hour in the past. Significant routine maintenance. Nicely, not just zen. And women, the last straw is when you get a decorative chain for keeping your glasses all-around your neck. Tragic.Foamposites For Sale
Immediately after a couple of month or two with the drugstore magnifying visitors, for me, the thrill was gone, and i began to observe all the more strain, most likely thanks to hazy, low-cost plastic lenses, and astigmatism that I assumed could possibly have to have a personalized prescription. The reality that I would also be getting into ?bifocal territory? dropped yet another unpleasant bomb on me.
Because I?ve been examining numerous fascinating items (price lots of more articles or blog posts for an additional day,) it occurred to me that not merely did I not choose to expend income on this case, I didn?t desire to take just about any eye deterioration in the least. Surely it wasn?t the one selection in each of the world. My mom calls it stubborn, but I made a decision that since my condition was not accurately serious, brain above make any difference and a few eye physical exercises would correct me appropriate up. I?m guaranteed my mind-set helped, but so did these yoga workout routines for eyes.
All these workouts can be achieved a few times each day, provided that you don?t sense any muscular strain. Should you do really feel strain, simplicity up a little and regulate your ?workout? accordingly.
1st, sit comfortably, and breathe deeply, only by means of the nose if at all possible. Concentration to get a moment on soothing shoulders, neck, jaw and all facial muscle groups. Move your chin for your shoulder, left and ideal, particularly if you?ve been sitting still for your long time. Shut your eyes gently, really feel gratitude and appreciation for your personal eyesight. Open up your eyes generally ? not wide ? and slowly look still left and right 5 times, then shut your eyes and breathe. Open your eyes once again and look up and down five situations, adopted by gently closing your eyes yet again and also a couple of deep breaths. Do identical workout routines seeking diagonally up/left to down/right five occasions, then the opposite course diagonally. Close your eyes and breathe deeply. Open your eyes once more, seem up, and start a gradual clockwise circle. Do that five situations, shut your eyes and breathe. Do the same in a counterclockwise direction, then shut your eyes and breathe.dr dre beats solo
If you open your eyes slowly but surely once more, raise an individual arm out facing you using your thumb up. A considerable home or possibly a window close by may help, because you need to have to focus on some thing distant, then your thumb, then your nose. Repeat five moments; distance, thumb, nose, and once more follow with closed eyes and deep respiratory. Just take note of the diverse eye muscle tissue that happen to be acquiring utilized.
Upcoming, rub your palms together until they turn out to be heat with the friction. Even include things like your fingers along with the backs of one?s hands on this rubbing. This really is to release the existence power of one?s hand chakras so you?re able to channel the energy into eye peace. When your fingers are warm, place the palms gently about your eyes ? will not press tricky to the brow or cheek bones ? just lay your palms above your shut eyes and luxuriate in the darkness for so long as it can be snug. or feasible. Carry on the deep respiratory via the nose only, and visualize a few particular aspects of your entire body (starting up from your top down) growing if you inhale, and shrinking once you exhale. Using your eyes still closed, consider a ship on drinking water shifting gradually nearer, then more away from you in a very figure 8, left and right. You will be escalating optic nerve attention by owning this darkness devoid of slumber. Realize that any time you rub your palms similar to this and area them over your eyes, you?re getting vitality for your eyes, and you may repeat this several situations on a daily basis devoid of the opposite physical exercises. Just take into account that being as relaxed as feasible though accomplishing it is quite important.
Now, persons could possibly have a look at you funny should you be doing this while in the office, nonetheless they also may well be checking out you through lenses thicker than soda bottles, even with some embedded, progressive trifocal action occurring, so really don?t get worried about this, and just permit them have a very no cost show.
You will also find some behaviors it is possible to include to help your vision. Snack on carrots, celery, berries. Dark chocolate and red wine (moderately!) offer flavonoids to shield the eyes. Avocados are rich in lutein to aid eye wellness, and Bilberry extract is regarded that will help strengthen vision naturally. Adequate quantities of rest (a minimum of 7 or eight hrs an evening) may also be paramount for wholesome eyes, as well as although we are inclined to believe we don?t have ample time for resting, we?d all be smart to make time for it. A twenty or thirty moment break with slow belly respiratory right during the middle on the day can perform miracles. It gives a lot more positive aspects than just supporting eye well being, as well as the exact same goes for cigarette smoking. You recognize it will benefit all your health and fitness to stop, but quite a few people who smoke do not comprehend the amount they?re hurting their eyesight, and even how effectively they see colour, with smoking. The eyeball is full of little capillaries that constrict with all the use of nicotine, and people capillaries are how the eyes be given the blood and oxygen they need to function normally.

House panel approves contentious GOP budget plan

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The top Republican in the House predicted a deficit-slashing GOP budget plan is on track to pass next week despite clearing the Budget Committee by a razor-thin margin.
"I am confident that we will have the votes," said House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio.
But there's lingering resentment among tea party lawmakers that the bold but contentious blueprint doesn't go far enough, even though it calls for cutting $5.3 trillion from President Barack Obama's budget over the coming decade, including sweeping cuts to federal health care programs and social programs aimed at the poor.
While the measure calls for swiftly bringing the deficit under control, promising to cut it from $1.2 trillion this year to $304 billion by 2015, it fails to project a balanced budget for decades. Two Republicans, Justin Amash of Michigan and Tim Huelskamp of Kansas, opposed the measure in a 19-18 vote in the Budget panel.
The GOP plan is nonbinding but calls for repealing Obama's health care law, while transforming Medicare into a system in which the government subsidizes purchases of health insurance on the private market instead of directly paying medical bills.
The Medicare proposal won't be the subject of follow-up legislation under the arcane budget process on Capitol Hill. Nor do Republicans plan to pass a detailed proposal to overhaul the nation's complicated, loophole-ridden tax code this year.
But other elements of the measure are likely to advance this spring ? at least in the GOP-dominated House ? as parts of a 10-year, $261 billion package of cuts to replace deep, across-the-board spending cuts set to hit the Pentagon and domestic agencies in January. Those cuts were required under last year's budget pact because of the failure of the deficit "supercommittee" last fall.
This spring's substitute cuts are likely to target, among other programs, food stamps, federal employee pensions, farm subsidies and a proposal to require higher-income Medicare beneficiaries to pay higher premiums. There's also a proposal to require higher-income Medicare beneficiaries to pay higher premiums. Some of those ideas have been marched through the House before, only to die in the Democratic-controlled Senate. But the agriculture and food stamp cuts haven't ? and may prove troublesome.
The Senate has no plans for a companion measure.
The budget measure also would force new austerity on an upcoming round of spending bills for domestic agencies without regard to spending limits carefully negotiated with Obama and Senate Democrats last summer.
The GOP plan, drafted by Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., would use sharp cuts to domestic programs to shrink U.S. deficits to $3.1 trillion over the coming decade, less than half the size of those proposed by Obama last month.
But it does so in ways that would be unprecedented ? and unrealistic ? by relying on assumptions like cutting transportation outlays from $93 billion this year to just $50 billion in the 2013 budget year starting in October. Its cuts to the Medicaid health care program for the poor and disabled would total more than $800 billion over the coming decade, which Democrats warned would mean that many frail, elderly people would lose nursing home care.
The main budget document, called a budget resolution, sets the parameters for follow-up legislation on spending and taxes. Even though its broader goals usually are not put into place, it is viewed as a statement of party principles.
Ryan's plan is more of a campaign manifesto than a governing document. It is a dead letter in the Senate and is not even a starting point for a dialogue with Obama. For one thing, it breaks faith with last summer's hard-fought budget pact, seeking to impose new 5 percent cuts on domestic agencies whose operating budgets will be written by the appropriations committees later this year.
"It would be difficult to overstate the radicalism of the domestic cuts proposed by the House budget," acting White House budget director Jeff Zients said. "Over a decade, the resolution would cut over $1 trillion in non-defense spending on top of the reductions the president has already signed into law."
The measure is, however, more generous to the Pentagon, calling for restoring more than half of the nearly $500 billion cut from defense accounts over the coming decade by last year's budget pact. But it fails to address a $300 billion-plus hole in Medicare's budget under an archaic formula for physician reimbursements.

Benefits of travel insurance for business travelers | Travel Insurance ...
Travel insurance has been doing the rounds in discussions over the years. However, of late, travel insurance for business travelers have been specially thrust out into the limelight. This is because of the increasing number of business travelers and the marginally high number of overseas or interstate trips that business travelers make annually, in the contemporary times.
Cost saving ? It would be foolhardiness to avoid investing in a travel insurance plan for yourself if you are out on frequent business trips. In the long run, spending some money on premiums actually allow you to save a lot more in case some emergency arises in transit or at the travel destination during work. This also works great for your free credit report government.
Hospitals abroad are costlier - In case you do not have travel insurances, there remains high chances of having to pay a hefty bill for treatment at hospitals outside the home soil. It would be best to have an insurance policy to cover medical costs for treatment in any international destination as well as one that cover your cost for evacuation, if need be.
Other benefits - A number of individuals are not acquainted with the fact that the travel insurances often cover baggage loss as well. As per your travel insurance provider, you could also get hands on a policy that covers the trip delays as well as cancellation charges.
Before choosing travel insurance, research up on the destination you frequently visit or are about to visit. This is because, for areas that are certified as high risks (in terms of wars, natural disasters and the like), there are special travel insurance plans available. With such a number of benefits, it is expected that buying travel insurance is a step that all business travelers must take without further delay.
Neil Shultz is a wealth management expert. Shultz recommends people to be on a lookout for good travel insurance schemes for investments, if they do not have a bad credit score and have ample amount to invest for extended years.

Ailing South Sudanese fly home before deadline
Elderly and disabled South Sudanese in Sudan flew to their newly independent homeland on Wednesday in the last major movement of southerners before an April 8 deadline, the IOM said.
The "vulnerable" group of South Sudanese includes those with severe medical conditions.
They are among an estimated 500,000 ethnic southerners still in the north before next month's deadline for them to leave or regularise their status at the end of a grace period following the South's independence in July.
The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said it flew more than 240 people and their escorts to communities in the South on Wednesday.
A total of about 2,200 people will take dozens of flights south over 10 days, the agency said.
"The flights will be the last thing that we can do before April the 8th," Jill Helke, IOM's chief of mission in Sudan, told AFP.
But she said that, to some extent, "the pressure of the ending of the transition period should be reduced" with the signing last week by Sudan and South Sudan of an agreement during African Union-led talks in Addis Ababa.
Under the deal, both countries agreed to "accelerate their cooperation" to provide identification and other documents related to the status of people.
In order to apply for northern residence, people need documents from South Sudan. The north has not put in place the system to legalise their status and, until recently, the south showed no readiness to document those in the north, creating a vicious circle.
The United Nations refugee agency has called last week's agreement a "positive step".
Earlier this month the UN Special Representative for South Sudan, Hilde Johnson, said after meetings in Khartoum that although there is no formal change to the April 8 deadline, "there is an understanding that there might be flexibility on this issue."
Helke said her agency has proposed a survey of southerners in Sudan, which could lead to their receiving an interim document "that would afford protection from deportation or harassment or whatever else might be happening to people who are undocumented.
"We still haven't had it in writing but we believe we will get that quite soon."
The intergovernmental body, which is dependent on donor funding, has helped to move more than 23,000 southerners from Sudan to South Sudan, mostly by river barge.
A train took about 1,500 to the south earlier this month, and in January a series of IOM flights airlifted an earlier group of sick and elderly.

Data from MESSENGER spacecraft reveals new insights on planet Mercury

(Santa Barbara, Calif.) Thanks to the MESSENGER spacecraft, and a mission that took more than 10 years to complete, scientists now have a good picture of the solar system's innermost planet.
On March 17, MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space Environment, GEochemistry, and Ranging) completed its one-year primary mission, orbiting Mercury, capturing nearly 100,000 images, and recording data that reveals new information about the planet's core, topography, and the mysterious radar bright material in the permanently shadowed areas near the poles. The findings are presented in two papers published online in Science Express.
"Mercury is the last unexplored planet," said UC Santa Barbara physics professor emeritus Stanton Peale, who devised the procedure used for detecting whether or not Mercury had a liquid core. The way Mercury was formed, he said, may show some constraints on the formation of the solar system.
For one thing, Mercury's core is larger than expected almost 85 percent of the planetary radius. The Earth's core, in contrast, is just over half of the planet's radius. Additionally, Mercury appears to have a more complex core than Earth's a solid iron sulfide layer that is now part of the mantle, which encases a liquid core, which may float on a solid inner core.
The scientists, led by MIT researchers David E. Smith and Maria T. Zuber, also found that Mercury's solid outer core and liquid inner core contain more iron than Earth, relative to the whole planet, which influences the way Mercury's magnetic field was generated. However, Peale noted that the surface is comprised of lighter elements.
"We didn't expect so much sulfur," he said, adding that there was almost no iron found on the surface of the planet. With no iron, the volcanic surface rocks are too light to have come from a mantle with the large average density derived for the internal structure. This led to the concept of a two-layer mantle with a light upper silicate layer, which could provide the low-density surface material over a dense iron sulfide layer.
In the larger picture, the presence of inordinately large amounts of sulfur on the surface indicates that Mercury's formation was not as orderly as some scientists had previously assumed, according to Peale. "Mercury is composed of material that had condensed over a wide range from the Sun," he said.
Other findings include a precise topographic model of the planet's northern hemisphere, which reveals a smaller spread in elevations compared to those of Mars or the Moon.
Additionally, radar-bright features at the poles located in areas of permanent shadow have been found to be consistent with a water-ice hypothesis; however the notion has yet to be tested further with MESSENGER's neutron spectrometer.
MESSENGER is already on the next phase of its investigations: an extended year-long mission that includes more comprehensive and more targeted measurements.

DENVER (AP) ? All that's needed is Peyton Manning's autograph.
After being pursued by teams around the NFL, the QB with four MVP awards is headed to the land of John Elway and Tim Tebow, agreeing to a contract with Denver that could make the Broncos an instant Super Bowl contender. It could also send one of the NFL's most intriguing young players packing.
So much for Tebowmania.
Manning called Elway on Monday morning and told the Broncos executive that he had chosen Denver over the Tennessee Titans and San Francisco 49ers in the wildest free-agent chase of the offseason.
The Broncos and Manning's agent then hashed out details of a deal that's expected to be worth about $95 million over five years.
If they can reach an agreement, Manning could sign the deal and be introduced at a news conference as early as Tuesday.
Manning was wooed to Denver by Elway, the former QB who led the Broncos to two Super Bowl championships and now serves as their vice president of football operations. Elway never sounded all that convinced Tebow was the answer at the sport's most important position, and now could trade the hugely popular QB who energized the Broncos in a run to the playoffs last season but was plagued by erratic play.
Manning turns 36 on Saturday and missed the 2011 season because of multiple neck surgeries, which made him expendable to the rebuilding Indianapolis Colts. They cut him March 7 rather than pay a $28 million bonus.
But Manning's success in the past made him a prize that teams from San Francisco to Miami felt they couldn't pass up.
"There's a lot to be excited about," Broncos defensive end Robert Ayers, a fellow Tennessee alum, said outside the team's complex Monday. "Just being on his team is going to make you want to play better."
By luring the elite QB to Denver, Elway has delivered his biggest victory for the Broncos since he led them to their second straight Super Bowl title in 1999. He retired shortly after that 34-19 win over Atlanta and the Broncos have won just two playoff games since.
Manning won an NFL championship in 2007. And although no starting QB has ever earned a Super Bowl ring for two different teams, when he arrives at the Broncos' headquarters to sign his new deal, Manning at least can see the two Lombardi Trophies in the lobby that Elway won when he was 37 and 38.
Elway returned to the Broncos last year after the franchise hit rock bottom with an embarrassing scandal ? the team was caught videotaping a 49ers practice ? and a 4-12 season that cost coach Josh McDaniels his job.
It was McDaniels who drafted Tebow with the 25th pick of the 2010 draft.
The big question now facing Elway now is what to do about Tebow, who has three years left on his contract.
Tebow took over a 1-4 team from Kyle Orton last year and led the Broncos to an 8-8 finish and the AFC West crown with a series of stirring comebacks that captured the attention of the football world and beyond.
Tebowmania reached its apex in the playoffs, when he threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas on the very first play of overtime to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers. The next week, though, Tebow was smothered by the New England Patriots, who easily eliminated the Broncos, 45-10.
Afterward, Elway declared Tebow was the Broncos' starting quarterback heading into training camp this summer but said the southpaw would have to improve his flawed mechanics and footwork to win the job heading into the season.
He also said he'd spent time tutoring Tebow himself and would add more quarterback competition through the draft and free agency.
Did he ever, landing maybe the most sought-after free agent in NFL history.
Several Broncos predicted the free agency floodgates will swing wide open once Manning officially joins the team.
"I think we'll sign some guys, probably a few guys, like Dallas Clark, Jeff Saturday, guys waiting to see what Peyton was going to do," Ayers said. "Defensive guys want to play with a lead, and I'm pretty sure guys are going to assume Peyton will put up points in this offense, we have some weapons."
Linebacker Joe Mays, who re-upped with Denver for three years and $12 million, said, "I can't wait to see the finished product and get a chance to go out there and hit the field."
The whirlwind courtship began two days after Manning stood alongside Colts owner Jim Irsay at an emotional farewell news conference. The Broncos flew Manning into town on a chartered plane and he then spent the day with Elway, coach John Fox and general manager Brian Xanders.
From there, Manning crisscrossed the country in search of a new team, as various clubs chased a guy with more than 50,000 yards passing, nearly 400 touchdowns and 11 Pro Bowl selections. After Denver, next up was a meeting with the Arizona Cardinals, and he also spent time speaking with ? or throwing for ? the Titans, 49ers and Miami Dolphins.
Last week, Manning worked out for Elway and company in North Carolina at Duke's athletic facilities. Elway said afterward that Manning "looked comfortable" throwing the ball.
A few days later, Manning decided he wanted to trade in his Colts horseshoe helmet for one adorned by a Bronco.
The move allows him to stay in the AFC, a conference he knows well and one considered weaker than the NFC at the moment, and would re-establish the tantalizing prospect of playing against his brother, New York Giants quarterback Eli, in a Super Bowl.
They already have three titles in the family ? Eli with two. Now the older brother has a chance to even the score.
Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper chimed in Monday, saying he hoped Tebow wasn't going anywhere and could serve an apprenticeship under Manning.
"He's a young man, right? And a year or two of working under John Elway and Peyton Manning, you know, I'm not sure any other quarterbacks around the country get that opportunity," Hickenlooper said.
Colorado Rockies first baseman Todd Helton, who was Manning's backup at Tennessee, said he never tried to talk Manning into coming to Colorado but was impressed by the zip on Manning's passes when he worked out with him at Duke earlier this year.
"He was fine. I kept telling him how impressed I was, how far he'd come since he came out after he had surgery," Helton said. "I'm an untrained eye, but I knew it hurt when I caught it."
With Manning joining the Broncos, oddsmakers in Las Vegas immediately made Denver one of the top choices to win the Super Bowl next season, which will be played in Manning's hometown of New Orleans.

No fear of the 'big bad wolf:' Feeding habits of German wolves investigated
ScienceDaily (Mar. 19, 2012) ? Scientists of the Senckenberg Research Institute in G?rlitz have been investigating the feeding habits of wolves in the first eight years since their appearance in Germany. The results are reassuring: The proportion of livestock on the menu lies at less than one percent. The related study was published recently in the journal Mammalian Biology.
For a long time, wolves had been wiped out in Germany, now they are slowly getting back home. But not everyone is happy at the return of the wild animal. The feeding habits of Canis lupus are the subject of many legends and fables. Wolves that tear sheep apart, eat household pets and even attack people -- the return of the predators to German regions awakens fear and generates conflict amongst its inhabitants, hunters and farmers.
"The dietary habits of wolves has been the greatest point of contention with their return to Germany and it induced us to examine in closer detail the feeding habits of the wolves that migrated to Lusatia over ten years ago," explains Hermann Ansorge, head of the Zoology Department at the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History in G?rlitz. "We took a look at what was on the menu for the wolves and how this has changed since the appearance of wolves in East Germany."
For this purpose the scientists collected over 3000 samples of wolf scat and tested them for undigested evidence of the animals' prey, such as hair, bones, hooves or teeth.
Using this information, supplemented by the findings of the remains of prey, it was possible for the G?rlitz zoologists to determine the nutritional intake of the carnivores in detail. Wild ungulates accounted for over 96% of the wolves' prey, according to the investigation. The majority of these were roe deer (55.3%), followed by red deer (20.8%) and wild boar (17.7%). A small proportion of the prey was accounted for by the hare, at almost 3 percent.
"Less than one percent of the prey analysed was of livestock origins" adds Ansorge, continuing: "As long as sheep and other livestock are well protected and there is a sufficient supply of wild animals, the wolves will not risk confrontation with electric fences and guardian dogs."
The G?rlitz zoologists investigated not only what the wolves are eating nowadays, but also how their feeding habits have changed over the years. Wolves are highly adaptable in terms of their dietary intake. For example, it is known from Canada that the wolf packs there feast on salmon in the autumn time.
"We were interested to find out how, why and how quickly the dietary composition of the wolf has changed in Saxony" explains Ansorge. The wolves in Lusatia came to Germany from Poland. There, the packs lived primarily on red deer, in contrast to the German wolves. During the early years of the study, the proportion of red deer eaten was considerably higher, whilst the ratio of roe deer was accordingly lower than in the subsequent five years. "We asked ourselves why the wolves changed their behaviour or whether the initial conditions had changed," the G?rlitz zoologist continues.
In comparison to the Polish forests, those in Lusatia tend to be smaller and crossed by paths and fields. They offer the perfect expansive living space for roe deer and wild boar, whilst red deer tend to retreat to the more spacious wooded areas. Roe deer are therefore a simple and frequent prey from the wolves' perspective.
The shift in eating patterns therefore resulted from the change in the environmental conditions. The wolves quickly adapted -- they required less than two generations to become used to the new conditions of the landscape in East Germany.
Since the legal protection of wolves was introduced in 1990, it has taken more than ten years for the wolves in Germany to make themselves at home and bear pups on the Muskau Heath (a military training area). At the present time, nine wolf packs live in Lusatia with around 34 young. "The potential for conflict between man and wolf is very low" Ansorge sums up the results of the study. "There really is nothing standing in the way of the wolf returning."
