One Direction have been taking their boy band antics across the States since May for their first-ever American headlining tour. And, with only days left on the massive Up All Night jaunt, 1D-er Niall Horan, recalled with MTV News the "absolutely nuts" time they've had.

"It's been, as you can see clearly, it's been absolutely nuts. We're still trying to get out head around it," he said, hours before hitting the stage in Charlotte. "It's been crazy. We've had a lot of fun ... we're doing these things called sheds, so they're outside and inside. There are like 20,000 people on an outdoor gig and they're really good to do. They're really fun. It's really warm outside and the crowds, they're amazing."

With fans doing anything they can to get the guys' attention while they're on stage (including throwing bras at them) Niall says that the last few shows have included far fewer undergarments being tossed at the stage.

"They've kind of toned it down a little bit. It was worse. Now it's kind of iPhones and keys, which are kind of dangerous.

"When we were in New York, we were on our day off and me and Liam [Payne] was going down the street with one of our security guards and we got absolutely mobbed by like 600 people in Times Square," he said. "I thought 'There is literally not one place I can walk down the street.' "

But, it's not just screaming girls who are turning out to see the guys. Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell tweeted about attending the 1D show in Atlanta, a show that just happened to be one of Niall's favorites (or at least the loudest). "We didn't have a clue what we were singing. We couldn't hear anything," he said. "We're very lucky we've got amazing crowds. We never have a bad crowd. We're very lucky we kind of get the adrenaline rush off them."

While Atlanta may have been the rowdiest show, New Jersey remains Niall's favorite for the opposite reason. "Harry [Styles] got the crowd to take their phones and lights out of their pocket and we turned off the lights so you couldn't see the crowd and all you could see are the lights swaying," he said. NEW YORK (AP) ? Homebuilders led stocks up on Tuesday, helping major indexes recoup some losses from the day before. Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. surged after the media conglomerate said it may split into two companies.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 32.01 points to close at 12,534.67.

PulteGroup, Lennar and other housing stocks climbed following news that a measure of national home prices rose 1.3 percent in April, the first increase in seven months. The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home price index showed a rise in 19 out of the 20 major cities tracked; Detroit was the only city where prices fell.

PulteGroup rose 49 cents to $9.72 and Lennar rose 81 cents to $27.39.

"There's some good news out there, especially if you look at the housing market," said John De Clue, regional investment director of U.S. Bank's wealth management unit in Minneapolis. "But there's this overriding theme: concerns over global growth. Things are pretty much slowing everywhere you look."

News Corp. jumped 8 percent. The company confirmed that it's contemplating a breakup into two publicly traded companies. The split would divide its publishing from its entertainment businesses. The media empire includes The Wall Street Journal, Fox News Channel, and newspapers in Britain and Australia. News Corp.'s stock leapt $1.68 to $21.76.

In other trading, the broader Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 6.27 points to 1,319.99. The Nasdaq composite rose 17.90 points to 2,854.06.

Investors sold coal company stocks after S&P lowered the credit rating for James River Coal deeper into junk status, citing weaker demand for coal. Utilities have favored natural gas instead of coal to generate electricity and are also preparing for new emission standards. James River plunged 15 percent, or 43 cents, to $2.49.

Alpha Natural Resources sank 20 cents, to $7.73. Peabody Energy dropped 34 cents to $21.12.

More worrisome developments in Europe kept U.S. markets in check. Spain's borrowing costs jumped in a pair of short-term debt auctions, the latest sign that investors are hesitant to lend the country money. The interest rate on the country's 3-month bills was 2.36 percent Tuesday, nearly triple the rate in the last such auction in May.

Spain's main stock index sank 1.5 percent, the second day straight of deep losses, and the yield on its benchmark 10-year government bond rose to 6.81 percent, which makes it more expensive for the country to borrow. The slump in Spanish financial markets came a day after the credit rating agency Moody's lowered ratings on 28 Spanish banks.

Stock markets fell sharply in the U.S. and Europe on Monday as Europe's latest efforts to calm its financial crisis sapped investors' confidence. Spain's formal request for help for its banking systems left many questions unanswered, including how much money it needs.

Markets have also been battered by signs of withering economic growth around the world. Manufacturing has slowed in China, and hiring has weakened in the U.S. The Dow has taken its two largest daily losses of the year this month: a 250-point plunge June 21 and a 274-point one June 1.

Even with those losses, the Dow remains up 1.1 percent for June. The S&P 500 is up 0.7 percent.

Among other stocks making big moves:

? Apollo Group, a for-profit education company which operates the University of Phoenix, soared 10 percent. The company reported quarterly income that was far larger than analysts had expected. The company's stock rose $3.34 to $35.81.

? Seagate Technology gained 4 percent. The maker of hard disk drives is going to replace Progress Energy in the S&P 500 index. As a result, fund managers, whose performance is measured against the S&P index, are more likely to buy Seagate. The stock rose 85 cents to $24.12.

GOODWELL, Okla. (AP) ? Three Union Pacific Railroad crewmembers were missing after two freight trains collided Sunday in the Oklahoma Panhandle, authorities said.

An eastbound train carrying vehicles and a westbound train crashed about 10:08 a.m. Sunday near Goodwell, Union Pacific spokeswoman Raquel Espinoza said. A two-person crew was aboard each train, and officials were unable to account for two engineers and a conductor, Espinoza said.

The other conductor appeared to be uninjured, and officials were interviewing him about what happened, she said.

"He's shaken up about the situation, and we are working to make sure that he receives any care that he needs. We're doing everything we can to find the rest of the crew," Espinoza said.

Law officers were searching areas near the tracks to determine if the missing crewmembers had escaped injury, Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper Betsy Randolph said.

"We're hoping they may have jumped off the train," Randolph said.

Two locomotives on the 80-car westbound train and a locomotive from the 108-car eastbound train caught fire after the collision, Espinoza said. One train was hauling a resin solution, but Espinoza said that load wasn't on fire and was doused with water as a precaution.

Firefighters had the blaze contained by Sunday night, but it continued to burn, Randolph said.

"Once the fire is out then we will have to wait until the wreckage cools ? it's all metal ? before emergency personnel can get in there," she said.

At least one firefighter was taken to a hospital for treatment of a heat-related injury after temperatures climbed past 100 degrees in the area, Randolph said. Other firefighters were treated for similar ailments at the scene.

A National Transportation Safety Board team was en route to the scene Sunday night. A spokesman didn't immediately return a message seeking comment.

Tropical Storm Debby turns sights on Fla., Ala.

A state of emergency has been declared in Louisiana in preparation for Tropical Storm Debby and oil rigs across the Gulf have been evacuated. The Weather Channel's Mike Seidel reports.

Updated at 10:13 p.m. ET: Parts of Florida and Alabama were under a tropical storm warning Sunday as Debby churned off the Gulf Coast, leaving wary residents to closely watch a storm whose path has so far been difficult to forecast.

Underscoring the storm's unpredictable nature, forecasters discontinued a tropical storm warning for Louisiana after forecast models indicated Debby was less likely to make a westward turn than initially predicted. Coastal Alabama and parts of Florida, including the Panhandle, remained under tropical storm warnings.

Debby already had dumped heavy rain on parts of Florida and spawned some isolated tornadoes, causing some damage to homes and knocking down power lines. High winds forced the closure of an interstate bridge that spans Tampa Bay and links St. Petersburg with areas to the southeast.

The first named storm of 2012 to enter the Gulf of Mexico, was centered about 115 miles south-southwest of Apalachicola, Florida and was nearly stationary, the National Hurricane Center said in its 7 p.m. CDT update.

Debby, no longer expected to gain hurricane strength, packed winds of 60 mph, the Miami-based center said.

Citing a "significant change in the forecast track," the NHC said Debby is expected to hit the Florida Panhandle near Panama City on Thursday as a tropical storm. "This forecast remains uncertain due to weak steering currents," the NHC said.

The NHC had previously predicted that the storm would track westward toward the Louisiana coast as a weak hurricane, spurring Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal to declare a state of emergency.

Chris Landsea, a meteorologist at the National Hurricane Center, said forecasters rely on computer models which were contradictory until Sunday.

"They came into a bit more of an agreement that the westward turn is less likely," he said.

Landsea said every storm is different and has different characteristics, "and in this case it's a very unpredictable storm." He said Debby was could become a hurricane.

A major concern will be flooding from heavy rainfall. Parts of Florida and southeast Georgia could receive 10 to 15 inches of rain, with some areas getting as much as 20, he said.

Debby's top sustained winds were at about 60 mph (95 kph). The storm was moving toward the northeast at 3 mph (6 kph).

Near the mouth of the Mississippi southeast of New Orleans, Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser said officials were making preparations to protect the main highway from tidal flooding.

At least one tornado linked to the storm touched down Saturday in southwest Florida, but no injuries were reported. Another was reported Sunday in Venice, damaging some homes.

"This is quite common with this type of storm," senior hurricane specialist Stacy Stewart with the National Hurricane Center said of the twisters. "They tend to not be very large or long-lived, which can be difficult to detect on radar. So people need to keep an eye on the sky."

Debby has shut nearly a quarter of offshore crude oil and natural gas production, the U.S. government said.

BP Plc, the largest oil producer in the Gulf of Mexico, shut in all of its production. The Louisiana Offshore Oil Port, the only U.S. port for handling the largest oil tank ships, stopped operating due to rough seas.

ConocoPhillips and Royal Dutch Shell Plc had also shut some of their production as of Sunday as the first storm of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season to threaten offshore production gained strength in the Gulf.

The storm has a 30 percent chance of reaching hurricane strength before landfall and could temporarily disrupt 55 percent of Gulf offshore oil production and 44 percent of natural gas production due to short-term evacuations, according to Weather Insight, a unit of Thomson Reuters.

Despite storm warnings in the Panhandle, Debby hadn't totally dampened vacations.

Thousands were on the beach at Pensacola Beach, Fla., on Sunday morning. Many used their phones to take photos of huge waves crashing into the concrete supports of a fishing pier. There wasn't any rain yet; just gusty winds and dark, fast-moving clouds.

Few people were in the water. Red flags warned tourists to stay out of the surf, and lifeguards cruised the sand on all-terrain vehicles, blowing whistles at anyone who got near the waves.

Workers with rental companies used pickup trucks to gather chairs and umbrellas as a precaution against an unusually high tide.

Microsoft Announces Shift to Windows 8 for Windows Phone

Microsoft expects the first Windows Phones with the Windows 8 operating system to become available later this year, the company announced today at its Windows Phone Summit for developers in San Francisco.

The next generation phones will offer a revamped Start screen, better multitasking, digital wallet and NFC wireless functionality (tap to pay), updated speech functionality, enterprise device management and security features.
