As it marks 500th anniversary of Sistine Chapel frescoes, Vatican sees no need to cut visits

VATICAN CITY - Five centuries after Michelangelo's ceiling of frescoes was inaugurated in the Sistine Chapel, Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday celebrated the "symphony of figures" contemplated during prayer.

Benedict marked the anniversary by saying vespers beneath the frescoes, as his predecessor Julius II had half a millennium earlier.

The pope said that contemplating the frescoes in the chapel of the Apostolic Palace renders them "more beautiful still, more authentic. They reveal all of their beauty."

"It is as if during the liturgy, all of this symphony of figures come to life, certainly in a spiritual sense, but inseparably also esthetically," the pope said.

At least 10,000 people visit the site each day, raising concerns about temperature, dust and humidity affecting the famed art. But a Vatican Museums official says there are no plans to try to limit tourists' access.

Museums Director Antonio Paolucci said in an article in the Vatican newspaper on Wednesday that sometimes as many as 20,000 people a day visit the chapel. But, he said, for the time being "the adoption of a maximum number (of visitors) will not be necessary."

Fighter shows why you?re supposed to protect yourself at all times (VIDEO)

Sometimes, MMA fighters will try to make their fight exciting by dropping their hands and daring their opponent to hit them. UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva did it in his easy win over Stephan Bonnar, and Nick Diaz is quite well known for making this move.

To beg for a punch, a fighter should have confidence in his or her chin. He or she should be positive that this won't happen:

Yep, that's why the referees remind fighters to protect themselves at all times.

Thanks, With Leather.

How animals deal with downpours

With the rainy season now in full force across much of the United States, animals both in the wild and at zoos are coming up with some unique ways to cope.

How animals react can depend on three basic things: the species, the individual's personality and the animal's access to human-made shelter and goods.

Outside of humans, orangutans have come up with some of the primate world's best ways of dealing with rain. Orangutans live in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra, where dampness is part of the landscape.

In the forest during storms, orangutans will make protective canopies and "hats" out of leaves, but in zoos, they have found a more attractive material.

BLOG: Snub-Nosed Monkey Sneezes When It Rains

"Here in Seattle, rain is virtually an everyday occurrence," Gigi Allianic, spokesperson for Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo, told Discovery News. "Our orangutans wrap burlap bags around themselves and often just sit out storms. Like many of our other animals, they also have the option to retreat to an enclosure."

Most terrestrial animals do seek shelter. In nature, that can happen in tree or log holes, under rocks or leaves, or underground. Smaller animals like squirrels and mice will huddle together in such shelters, attempting to stay warm.

Rain seems to annoy most species, however, even aquatic animals. During torrential downpours, animals such as frogs, turtles and fish may retreat to lower levels of lakes and ponds, with some seeking added shelter under things like fallen rocks or driftwood.

Numerous animals, however, often remain out in the open and try to tolerate the wet.

"Grizzly bears at our zoo will often do that, even though they can go into an enclosure," Allianic said, adding that bears are very good swimmers.

PHOTOS: Hurricane Sandy's Path of Destruction

Reptiles possess scaly skin composed of a protein called keratin. This allows reptile skin to have waterproof qualities while still remaining properly hydrated.

"Crocodiles are pretty good at dealing with inclement weather," Nick Hanna, assistant curator at Audubon Nature Institute in New Orleans, told Discovery News. "They remain calm and cool and never freak out, even during hard rains."

Some animals do lose their cool, but not necessarily because of rain.

    1. Political forecasting stirs up a storm

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Nationwide polls may portray the presidential campaign as a neck-and-neck race, but less conventional data-crunching methods spit out a different picture.

    2. Scientists look at climate change, superstorm
    3. How animals deal with downpours
    4. The scariest science experiments ever

"We've learned that, for certain animals, it's better and safer to leave them out instead of in," Hanna said. "When confined, ostriches tend to run into walls. African antelopes sometimes get so spooked that they will also run into walls."

These species, though, still have access to off-exhibit areas and canopies to shield them from sun and rain.

In certain cases, how an animal reacts has more to do with its individual personality. Hanna and Allianic indicated that some primates and elephants fare better than others during rainstorms, particularly when thunder and lightning are involved.

NEWS: What Are the Risks from Hurricane Sandy?

"More skittish individuals can get spooked, and they will tend to retreat indoors," Allianic explained. "Even big elephants and great apes can be like dogs and cats when it comes to reacting to thunder and lightning."

While animals can try to get away from such loud noises, some may invariably become soaking wet.

The good news is that furry animals, such as giant pandas, tigers, brown bears, kangaroos and more, have all evolved an ability to shake themselves dry in mere seconds.

Recently, Andrew Dickerson of the Georgia Institute of Technology alongside colleagues Zachary Mills and David Hu determined that this shaking is tuned to the perfect frequency for each species, in terms of its size and anatomy. Loose skin tissue turns out to serve an important role.

"By whipping around the body, it increases the speed of drops leaving the animal and the ensuing dryness relative to tight dermal tissue," Dickerson and his team explained.

The finding also helps to explain why everything else around the dog during a shakedown usually gets wet, while the dog ends up dry.

Vladimir Putin joins pajama workforce, decides to work from home

Vladimir Putin's motorcade can shut down Moscow's already jammed streets for hours, much to the chagrin of commuters. So he plans to do more work at the presidential residence.

By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / October 18, 2012

A traffic light displays the image of Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in Moscow February 2012. Mr. Putin said on Wednesday that he plans to drive into Moscow less and work from home more in an effort to help reduce the city's notoriously bad traffic.

Sergei Karpukhin/Reuters

Russian President Vladimir Putin has finally decided to do something to help relieve Moscow's paralytic, bumper-to-bumper, round-the-clock, city-wide traffic congestion: He's going to drive less and work from home more often.

And that will, in fact, be a really big help, experts say.

"The president is minimizing his meetings in the Kremlin and is preferring to hold them in [his official residence] Novo Ogaryovo to avoid disturbing Muscovites," Mr. Putin's press secretary Dmitry Peskov told the independent Interfax news agency Wednesday.

"There is no substantive difference. If the meeting does not require any kind of ceremony, it is held in the suburban residence. He really has cut the use of motorcades to the minimum in Moscow," he added.

Helicopter rides to work

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev's press service simultaneously announced that he will use his own cars less and start taking a helicopter to his job, in the Russian White House in downtown Moscow.

Despite the millions of smoke-churning cars that clog Moscow's main roads, seemingly around the clock, the single biggest problem experts point to is the privilege accorded to the country's two top leaders and the Russian Orthodox Patriarch to have all traffic shut down between their home and workplace every single day.

"It will make a really huge difference if they cut down on their use of the roads," says Vyacheslav Lysakov, chairman of the Free Choice drivers' association, which has been fighting against official privileges on the roads since 2006.

"Every time one of our leaders goes somewhere, the police block traffic on three major roads for up to an hour and a half. It leaves an extremely negative impression on the public, and it's high time it was fixed," he adds.

In Putin's case, the entire 15-mile route between his sprawling countryside estate of Novo Ogaryovo ? a huge parkland containing several palatial buildings on the banks of the Moscow River ? and the Kremlin is completely shut down whenever the president goes to or from work. Once the roads have been closed and traffic sidelined under the watchful gaze of police, one or two decoy cars speed the full length of the route to check for problems, and only then does Putin's 12-car armored motorcade race through at speeds of up to 150 m.p.h..

Chasowa died for many of us. Shame on DPP | Face of Malawi

By George Kasakula

By the time I am writing this, police have not made any arrests after findings from a commission of inquiry on the death of Polytechnic student Robert Chasowa implicated some names closely linked with the former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

This is despite reports that police have formed task forces to bring to book those who are suspected to have ruthlessly cut short a promising life apparently for its political views and activism.

At times such as these, there are always attempts by those who may find themselves on the accused?s side in the matter to say the issue is about the Joyce Banda administration witch-hunting its opponents from DPP.

This would be missing the point and besides the issue.

The issue is that it is tragic that 20 years after we adopted multiparty system of government, people should still be dying for their political views.

I just find it incomprehensible and unacceptable in today?s world that some people, because of the mere fact that they belong to a ruling party, can sit down, plan and kill someone because they do not agree with his political views.

Come to think of it, who was Chasowa? He was a mere overexcited college student full of youthful optimism that he could change the world he was living in to suit himself. It is part of college life and growth.

At that stage, your mind is infused with ideas and ideologies on daily basis. You are at the stage when you are examining and defining yourself. You are hot-headed and believe what you believe. Politics is your playground and it is where you experiment with various ideas such as socialism, capitalism and marxism and you try to find a footing.

Did Chasowa deserve to die for this? The answer is hell no. If this were the case, then half of students in the university campuses across the world would be shot dead for their weird and sometimes foolish views.

As a nation, we said a resounding no to this when we brought down a strong MCP government in 1994 mainly because of its appalling human rights record and failure to respect the sanctity of life.

That some people today think because they belong to a ruling party, they can sit at a table and decide to kill someone should be totally rejected with the last ounce of blood and energy of every right-thinking Malawian.

Chasowa died for many of us who thought DPP had gone too far in treating this country as if it were a piece of their personal estate.

Chasowa could have been any of us. In fact, I do believe in my heart of hearts that if Bingu wa Mutharika were still alive today, some more Malawians could have also met Chasowa?s fate.

There is one way to close this matter for Chasowa?s family and all good Malawians who believe in rule of law: justice.

It is only then that we will let sleeping dogs lie.

This is just to teach a lesson to politicians and ruling party cadres that when they are told to commit atrocities against innocent Malawians, one day justice will catch up with them. Chasowa was a son, brother, cousin and boyfriend to someone.

He was also a Malawian. He did not deserve to be sent to his early grave in that cruel and brutal manner, all because of his political views.

Britain's economy emerged from its nine-month recession in the July to September quarter, when spending on the Olympics helped it grow by a bigger than expected 1 percent, according to official figures released Thursday. (AP) ? Britain's economy emerged from its nine-month recession in the July to September quarter, when spending on the Olympics helped it grow by a bigger than expected 1 percent, according to official figures released Thursday.

The number published by the Office for National Statistics beat the market consensus forecast of 0.6 percent growth and will make the Bank of England less likely to approve a further round of economic stimulus in November, analysts say.

The ONS said the result was the strongest quarterly growth in five years, bringing economic output back to the same level of a year ago. It is a first estimate and is subject to revision.

Prime Minister David Cameron, in a message on Twitter, said there was still much to do "but these GDP figures show we are on the right track, and our economy is healing."

Ed Balls, economic spokesman for the opposition Labour Party, said the economy remained "very weak" and there was "no time for complacency."

The Olympic Games and Paralympic Games likely gave the economy a boost, helping employment agencies, the entertainment sector and accommodation, the ONS said, though it gave no estimate of the total impact.

It did say that sales of Olympic tickets that occurred in 2011 and earlier in 2012 ? the ones it statistically allocated to third-quarter economic output ? accounted for 0.2 points of the rise in GDP.

Most analysts warned that beyond these one-time effects, the economy remains weak.

"As the Olympic effects unwind, it is still possible that the economy contracts again in the fourth quarter," said Vicky Redwood, chief UK economist at Capital Economics.

Others argued that the simple fact the economy grew is good news at a time when many European countries are sliding deeper into recession. About half of the nearby eurozone's 17 economies are in recession and even the largest, like Germany and France, are weakening.

Nida Ali, economic advisor to the Ernst & Young ITEM Club, estimated that when factoring out the one-time boosts, Britain's underlying growth was 0.3 percent, "which is really encouraging, particularly in the difficult external environment."

A breakdown of the ONS figures showed that the dominant services sector, which shrank by 0.1 percent in the second quarter, led the rebound with 1.3 percent growth. Production industries including manufacturing grew by 1 percent but construction activity fell 2.5 percent.

ASUS outs ET2300 all-in-one desktop with articulating, 23-inch touchscreen, optional Thunderbolt

If you're a PC maker launching a new lineup of Windows 8 devices, you're going to look awfully square if you don't have at least one touch-enabled all-in-one to show off. Clearly, ASUS got the memo. Here at a press event in New York City, the company announced the ET2300, a 23-inch desktop whose display can be pushed down to lie basically flat -- a pretty ubiquitous form factor these days. Starting with that IPS screen, it has 1080p resolution and promises horizontal viewing angles of 178 degrees. Under the hood, it runs your choice of Core i3, i5 or i7 processor, with either integrated Intel graphics or NVIDIA's GT 630M GPU. (Even then, you can choose between one and two gigs of dedicated video memory.) Other specs include up to 8GB of RAM, up to 2TB in HDD storage, a slot-loading DVD drive, Intel Wireless Display and optional Thunderbolt connectivity. Additionally, like ASUS' other products (even its tablets and phones), it makes use of SonicMaster's audio technology. We haven't heard anything regarding pricing or availability just yet, but we'll update this post if we do.

Ancestry.com Selling For $1.6 Billion, Will Receive Premium Buyout ...

Ancestry Sale 1 6 billion dollars

Ancestry.com is being sold to European firm Permira for a whopping $1.6 billion. Not bad for a site that bases its entire existence on tracking a person?s family tree.

According to reports Ancestry.com agreed to the 9.7% premium sales price on Monday. Ancestry.com first explored a sale in June, since that time shares have skyrocked by 41% at the genealogy website.

Since going public in 2009 shares at Ancestry.com have more than doubled, attracting attention from various private equity firms.

Ancestry.com is a huge hoarder of data with more than 2 million paying subscribers, 10 billion records and almost 40 million family trees.

Ancestry also owns websites ?MyFamily.com, ProGenealogists, and Rootsweb.com, genealogy software Family Tree Maker and Footnote.com. The latter platform holds billions of image that contain various historical records.

Ancestry.com is a global company that operates websites throughout parts of Europe and in Australia, China and Canada.

There are various family ancestry sites but Ancestory.com has become a mainstream entity, going so far as to partner with NBC for the reality TV show Who Do You Think You Are??which helped celebrities trace their family genealogies.

Ancestry.com is also no stranger to controversy, the site came under fire last year when the social security numbers of recently deceased people were leaked through the company?s Social Security Master File.

How Permira will leverage Ancestry.com to earn back its $1.6 billion buy price is not yet known. With the ability to reach a large unique visitor base it?s likely that much of Ancestry.com will continue with business as usual.

Nutz 4 Coconut Oil | Into The Gloss

There?s a saying made famous by John Fairchild, the former editor of?Women?s Wear Daily?(where both Nick and Alessandra clocked time), that goes: "Twice is a coincidence?three times is a trend." Well, the times we've heard about the myriad uses of coconut oil is?way past three. Whether mixed with baking soda and arrowroot and swiped under your arms as deodorant (as suggested in the?Moment For Deodorant comments by Gingeroo, Whitney Vesterfelt, and Valerie.CC); slicked on your feline for added shine (as explained to Emily by Sophia Lamar, whose cat Emily described as ?so glossy...jaguar-like?); used for cooking ?(as instructed to Alessandra by her ballet teacher); or applied to your face (as advised by seemingly everyone), coconut oil seemed pretty close to a miracle substance, if what we'd been seeing/hearing these past few months was true. Time had come for a little investigative journalism (here?s where we put on our fedoras and slip out of the room?cigars optional).

First of all, a little background info: coconut oil's bad rap (in the nutrition community, that is) dates back to?1934, when Congress imposed a tax on imported palm and coconut oils, in order to protect domestically produced vegetable oils (less healthy for the bod, but better for the nation's wallet). In 1986, the National Heart Savers Association mounted a misguided smear campaign, including full-page advertisements in nationally distributed newspapers, against ?tropical oils,? aiming to convince the consumer that palm and coconut oils would clog arteries due to cholesterol-raising saturated fats?when, in fact, the partially hydrogenated (USA-produced) replacements were the real offenders. Got all that?

But anywho, the public seems to have put their aversions aside and now coconut oil is everywhere.?And, the applications are endless:?as?car polish, guitar-string lubricant (and, ahem, personal lubricant, though it reportedly breaks down latex condoms), mascara-brush cleaner, stress reliever (via oil massaged into your scalp)...and TONS of other health- and fitness-related uses. Coconut oil possesses an unusualy high percentage of lauric acid (more than 50%), which is both anti-viral (known to help treat cold sores, herpes, boils, acne, and warts) and found in breast milk. It also has a big ol? helping of vitamin E, which is prime skin goodness, and its antimicrobial/antibacterial properties are said to help in preventing UTIs and yeast infections. Also, its very small molecular structure?this, according to a deep Google dive?allows for quick penetration into your hair follicles for moisturizing, and it increases your cell turnover rate, making it ideal for?rejuvenating?treatments.

But back to brass tacks:?Emerald Carroll?told us she uses it on her whole body?and?cooks with it,?Lindsey Wixson?is all about it,?Carolyn Murphy??swears by? it, and?Laurel Pantin,?Sharmadean Reid,?Keegan Singh,?and?Amanda Harlech?have all touted it.

Why? It?s?dope for your face. Says Marina Strom, one of the herbalists from the highly holistic Earth Tu Face (a bath/body line we love, which?believes whatever you put on your body you should be able to put in your body?i.e., eat):

"We LOVE coconut oil: it's powerfully protective and hydrating, rich in minerals and nutrients that quench thirsty skin and it's molecular structure allows for easy absorption through the skin and gives it it's soft, smooth texture?not greasy. Coconut oil contains medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), a type of fatty acid esters that absorb quickly and efficiently and help transport nutrients to the cells. It's a natural sunscreen, high in antioxidants, prevents destructive free-radical activity (the primary cause of aging), and lessens skin spots and other blemishes caused by aging/over-exposure to sunlight."

Not to mention Earth Tu Face's coconut-and-cardamom Body Butter smells insane; we were thisclose to tasting it.?Thankfully, the company's rep, Stephanie, told us that was A-ok, adding: "Marina uses it when she makes pancakes!" [Ed. note: Please, Earth Tu Face ladies, invite us to breakfast. Thanks!]

So, how/where should you procure your coconut oil? Via ITG word-of-mouth: for the high-end buyer into the whole 'cult-following' thing, Rose-Marie Swift offers a Raw Coconut Cream?beloved by Stevie Dance,?Rebecca Dayan,?and?Lisa Marie Fernandez. ?If you're more health-store-inclined, Garden of Life sells a 14 oz jar of Extra Virgin Coconut Oil for $10.99; and for those proud inhabitants of 'Spaceship Earth,' our man-with-a-plan?Dr. Bronner sells a fresh-pressed, fair-trade, organic Coconut Oil?that looks solid but melts immediately into a fast-absorbing fluid, which your skin just soaks up, sans residue and, contrary to our fears, without a lingering Mounds bar smell. Us? We're just loving the deeply moisturizing, all-natural, straight-from-the-earth glow thing at the moment.?Whichever type you fancy (just keep it un-refined and organic), feel free to apply liberally, all over?seriously,?wherever?and call us in the morning. (Or just tell us about your adventures in coconut oil below.)

AUSTIN ? Some are saying the upcoming Formula One (or F1) race in Austin will be the equivalent of the Super Bowl.

That's a description that may be hard for many in the U.S. to believe, but F1 enjoys a massive global audience. Some estimates suggest that half a billion people follow F1 worldwide.

Now ? for the first time since 2007 ? Formula One is back in the U.S., bringing along with it the glitz and glamor of what some argue is the pinnacle of motor racing.

Drivers in the most technologically advanced cars on the planet compete at tracks across the globe. In November, the new Circuit of The Americas, southeast of Austin, will play host.

"The day is finally here," said famed racing driver Mario Andretti. "We are rejoicing."

Andretti drove the first official laps during an opening ceremony on Sunday. Speeding down the straightaway in a black-and-gold 1979 Lotus F1 car, he helped add to the spectacle that is F1.

"It's a big motor sports circus," said Barry Mortimer, who works with the Lotus F1 team based in Oxfordshire, England. "Everyone wants to see the awesome technology."

Still, Formula One in the U.S. has a much smaller following, compared to other countries. During the visit to Austin, Mortimer said he and his English team members huddled around a TV and watched the Texas vs. Baylor game on Saturday night.

"F1 needs to be the show that football is," for the sport to reach the same kind of popularity in the U.S., Mortimer said.

November's Texas race is already sold out. Some of the cheapest tickets you'll find are online, but they're still pricey at around $300.

Some sellers are asking thousands of dollars for tickets to the best seats ? all for a sport where few in Texas can name the top drivers, and in which you will find no Americans behind the wheel.

But with a first-of-its-kind track built here in Texas, some believe that could all change. Not only putting Texas on the motor sports map, but making the U.S. once again a stop for that traveling motor sports circus.

New Jersey is expected to host a street race in 2014; Dallas staged an F1 race in 1984.

One of Everything at THE Ohio State University? You Won't Get ...

Home / Featured / One of Everything at THE Ohio State University? You Won?t Get Bored

Now this is a rec center! Credit: The Ohio State University/Office of Student Life/Department of Recreational Sports.

As part of Fit Bottomed College Week, we?re highlighting a few of the coolest college rec and fitness centers across the country!

It?s sufficient to say that most NCAA Division I colleges and universities probably have some high-tech workout equipment and facilities for students and faculty to take advantage of during the school year. Well, I?d say that?THE Ohio State University, as they like to refer to themselves, has some kick-ass recreation facilities. Yes, I said facilities, and not just one or two, but five to be exact. They span more than 90 acres and combined are used daily by 8,000 to 10,000 students and more than 4,500 faculty, community members, family, etc. (No wonder they are so dang good at football and basketball, among other sports I?m sure!)

The facilities are spread out over the campus, so you don?t have to haul your stuff from one side of campus to the other. I like that part. No sense in trying to discourage college students by making it harder to get to their workout. The flagship facility though is definitely the Recreation & Physical Activity Center (RPAC), which is their largest (shown above) with more than 630,000 square feet. OMG that is enormous! I can?t imagine something that large. The RPAC is at the center of campus and houses much of the welcome center, additional workout spaces and?a cool skywalk from the fitness center to the Physical Activity and Education Services academic building. How cool is that? There?s nothing like gettin? in a workout and then heading right to class.

Treadmills and ellipticals galore! Credit: The Ohio State University/Office of Student Life/Department of Recreational Sports

Aside from that mother of a fitness center, the Outdoor Adventure Center (OAC) is dedicated mostly to all things outdoors. They have rock climbing walls, equipment storage for kayaks and canoes, and they also have several turf fields where people can play soccer, flag football, rugby and so much more. Really? If I only had this in college, I might as well have spent most of my years outside?except for the extremely windy and cold conditions?but you get the point.

In conjunction with the OAC is the ARC, or the Adventure Recreation Center. This facility has four basketball courts, two indoor turf fields (who has heard of that for a college campus?) and several other fitness staples, such as weights and cardio machines. I?m getting jealous already and we are only getting warmed up. (Get it? Warmed up?)

So if none of those facilities appeals to you, there?s the Jesse Owens Recreation Centers. There is a North, South and West Center on campus, which is, according the website, a short walk for nearly 12,000 students. There?s that convenience factor I was talking about. The West facility is strictly used for tennis, but the other two are additional places for students and faculty to use. The North and South facilities house equipment like tumbling mats, table tennis tables and loads of cardio machines, like exercise bikes and ellipticals. Again, how could you not get out of your dorm room and go use these places? I think if I had access to all this in college, I would have dragged a few friends out more to go work out.

With all those facilities, it?s obvious what sets The Ohio State apart. Right?

?The sheer number of programs and services we offer,? says Emily Howard, program manager, marketing and creative services for The Ohio State. ?From traditional intramural sports and sport clubs, to outdoor adventure trips, competitive swim and diving teams, group fitness classes, personal training, massage, racquet sports, adapted recreation, indoor/outdoor tennis, etc., and the variety of special programming.?

And even though The Ohio State has these rad workout facilities, according to Howard, they can also boast sharing the title of oldest recreational sports department in the country, as it was founded in 1913. She says they share the title with the University of Michigan, and if anyone knows anything about college sports, that is one heck of a rivalry. Goodness, I would not want to get in the middle of an argument with those guys.

Which of these facilities sounds most appealing to you? ?Kelsey
