Obama brokers Israel-Turkey rapprochement

By Jeffrey Heller

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel apologized to Turkey on Friday for killing nine Turkish citizens in a 2010 naval raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla and the two feuding U.S. allies agreed to normalize relations in a surprise breakthrough announced by U.S. President Barack Obama.

The rapprochement could help regional coordination to contain spillover from the Syrian civil war and ease Israel's diplomatic isolation in the Middle East as it faces challenges posed by Iran's nuclear program.

In a statement released by the White House only minutes before Obama ended a visit to Israel, the president said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan had spoken by telephone.

"The United States deeply values our close partnerships with both Turkey and Israel, and we attach great importance to the restoration of positive relations between them in order to advance regional peace and security," Obama said.

The first conversation between the two leaders since 2011, when Netanyahu phoned to offer help after an earthquake struck Turkey, gave Obama a diplomatic triumph in a visit to Israel and the Palestinian Territories in which he offered no new plan to revive peace talks frozen for nearly three years.

The 30-minute call was made in a runway trailer at Tel Aviv airport, where Obama and Netanyahu huddled before the president boarded Air Force One for a flight to Jordan, U.S. officials said.

Israel bowed to a long-standing demand by Ankara, once a close strategic partner, to apologize formally for the deaths aboard the Turkish vessel Mavi Marmara, which was boarded by Israeli marines who intercepted a flotilla challenging Israel's naval blockade of the Palestinian-run Gaza Strip.

"In light of Israel's investigation into the incident which pointed to a number of operational mistakes, the prime minister expressed Israel's apology to the Turkish people for any mistakes that might have led to the loss of life or injury," Netanyahu's office said in a statement in English.

It added that he had agreed to conclude an agreement on compensation.

Netanyahu and Erdogan "agreed to restore normalization between the two countries, including returning their ambassadors (to their posts)," the statement said.

A statement issued by Erdogan's office said he had "accepted this apology." It also said the Turkish leader told Netanyahu "that he valued centuries-long strong friendship and cooperation between the Turkish and Jewish nations".

A senior U.S. official said Washington believes that its "national security interests" as well as those of its regional allies would be served by normalization of Israeli-Turkish ties.

FRAYED TIES

Ankara expelled Israel's ambassador and froze military cooperation after a U.N. report into the Mavi Marmara incident, released in September 2011, largely exonerated the Jewish state.

Israel had previously balked at apologizing to the Turks, saying this would be tantamount to admitting moral culpability and would invite lawsuits against its troops.

Voicing until now only "regret" over the incident, Israel has offered to pay into what it called a "humanitarian fund" through which casualties and their relatives could be compensated.

An Israeli political source said the way to a formal apology was paved by the sidelining of Avigdor Lieberman, who opposed such a move when he served as foreign minister in Netanyahu's previous government.

Lieberman resigned from the post in December after he was indicted on fraud charges. The far-right politician's return to the position in the new Netanyahu-led administration that took office a week ago depends on the outcome of his trial.

A source in Netanyahu's bureau said opening a new chapter with Turkey "can be very, very important for the future, regarding what happens with Syria but not just what happens with Syria".

Before the diplomatic breakdown, Israel and Turkey shared intelligence information and carried out joint military exercises. Israeli pilots trained in Turkish skies, improving their capability to carry out long-range missions such as possible strikes against Iran's nuclear facilities.

In Turkey, Erdogan's success in obtaining an Israeli apology was viewed as a diplomatic coup.

"This is a diplomatic success," Turkish political scientist Ufuk Ulutas said, noting that Turkey "did not take any step back regarding its demands."

10 Hybrids That Teach Their Drivers to Save Fuel

This car takes driver coaching to the extreme, with an Eco mode that varies the resistance on the gas pedal to encourage you to accelerate slowly. The M35h will also count and display all the miles that the car has driven on electricity alone. In our test car's case, it was more than 2000 miles for the life of the car at a time when the Infiniti had been driven 16,000 total miles. That certainly makes you feel good as a driver: It means 1 out of every 8 miles we drove in the Infiniti burned no gasoline. The dash has a graph that displays six 2-minute intervals of fuel-economy performance, showing the driver how he's driven in the past 12 minutes and how much electricity he's regenerated, in watt-hours. We averaged around 30.

By Yereth Rosen ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - The 2004 winner of Alaska's famed 1,000-mile sled-dog race, the Iditarod, won again at age 53 on Tuesday to become the oldest champion, a year after his son became the youngest winner. The latest ?who?s who list? is one that several celebrities probably do not want to be on. Some of the most famous folks in entertainment were violated when their personal finance records were posted on a website.

CBS Radio Houston has chosen not to research or even post the website that violated several big names in entertainment by posting such personal information as social security numbers, financial records, credit reports, addresses and phone numbers of some of the most world-renowned people.

CBS Radio Houston did learn however, that the website featured a ghostly girl holding her finger up to her lips and a comment about God as well as Satan.

Celebrities violated by the posting of personal information online include: Jay-Z and his wife Beyonc?, Britney Spears, Attorney General Eric Holder, former Alaska governor Sarah Palin and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Additional reports indicate that both Secret Service and the FBI were investigating the site.

Further reports stated that in terms of targeted individuals, the list grew on the site; within 24 hours of creation, the names of famous people and their personal records were made public.

The operator of the site also added specialized features on it including a count the number of visitors and a link to a Twitter account.

There was no other official word released about investigative efforts into this case. It is not clear as to why these certain celebrities were targeted.

  • "Suburgatory"

  • "Zero Hour"

<strong>"Zero Hour," ABC</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Canceled <strong>Why</strong>: The Anthony Edwards vehicle debuted to 6.3 million viewers with a 1.3 rating in the key 18-49 demographic, making it <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/15/zero-hour-ratings_n_2695800.html">the least-watched premiere for a scripted series in ABC's history</a>. Things only got worse from there.

Even up against reality powerhouse "American Idol," "The Big Bang Theory" has been delivering with crazy high numbers in the 18-49 demographic, beating out what was once Fox's juggernaut.

  • "Blue Bloods"

<strong>"Blue Bloods," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Likely to be renewed <strong>Why</strong>: The Tom Selleck-fronted police drama is a strong ratings performer for CBS on Fridays. It will likely be back to help launch new Friday shows and produce enough episodes to enter syndication.

  • "Criminal Minds"

<strong>"Criminal Minds," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Likely to be renewed <strong>Why</strong>: As one of CBS's strong procedural players, the series has been steady in the ratings and will likely be renewed to help anchor a night and launch a new drama.

  • "CSI"

<strong>"CSI," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Likely to be renewed <strong>Why</strong>: Of the two "CSI" shows on the air, "CSI" is the stronger player in the TV landscape. The show is nowhere near its earlier ratings, but after such a successful run, CBS would be smart to bring the show -- and some old faces back -- for an abbreviated farewell season.

  • "CSI: NY"

<strong>"CSI: NY," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: On the bubble <strong>Why</strong>: The spinoff series will be entering Season 10 in the 2013-2014 season. The ratings have faded over the years, but they're still pretty stable, especially for Fridays. It's a toss up, depending on how well CBS's development slate goes.

  • "Elementary"

<strong>"Elementary," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Likely to be renewed <strong>Why</strong>: One of the very few freshman series hits during the 2012-2013 TV season, CBS is very keen on this modern-day take on Sherlock Holmes. The audience has been steady and the network even gave it the post-Super Bowl timeslot.

  • "Golden Boy"

<strong>"Golden Boy," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Too soon to tell <strong>Why</strong>: CBS certainly has a handsome star at the front of this cop drama, but its late season entry and Friday timeslot could be a hint toward CBS's confidence in the show.

  • "The Good Wife"

<strong>"The Good Wife," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: On the bubble <strong>Why</strong>: A former ratings champ, "The Good Wife" has slipped to series low ratings on Sunday nights. Blame football overrun, fan-detested storylines or too many guest stars, but "The Good Wife" is certainly in the danger zone. What it has going for it: star power and critical praise, plus its nearing a good syndication sweet spot.

  • "Hawaii Five-0"

<strong>"Hawaii Five-0," CBS</strong <strong>Status</strong>: On the bubble <strong>Why</strong>: Its ratings -- bouncing around 8-10 million viewers an episode, are great ... if you're a show on NBC. By CBS standards, they're kind of meh, but this show has stars with very active fan followings. CBS could axe the drama to make room for new procedurals, or stick with it to get the show close to syndication gold.

  • "How I Met Your Mother"

<strong>"How I Met Your Mother," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Renewed <strong>Why</strong>: CBS handed out a ninth and final season to this comedy with the entire cast returning. Expect to meet the mother, finally.

  • "Made In Jersey"

<strong>"Made In Jersey," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Canceled <strong>Why</strong>: CBS pulled the plug on this legal drama very early on in the season because of low ratings.

  • "The Mentalist"

<strong>"The Mentalist," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: On the bubble <strong>Why</strong>: "The Mentalist" has fallen to mediocre ratings -- by CBS standards -- and could be axed in favor of making room for a new drama.

  • "Mike & Molly"

<strong>"Mike & Molly," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Likely to be renewed <strong>Why</strong>: The ratings are down a little bit from last year, but Melissa McCarthy's star continues to rise. CBS will likely bring the show back for another season.

  • "NCIS"

<strong>"NCIS," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Renewed <strong>Why</strong>: CBS reached a deal with series star Mark Harmon in early 2013, keeping the No. 1 show in America around for a Season 11.

  • "NCIS: LA"

<strong>"NCIS: LA," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Likely to be renewed <strong>Why</strong>: Viewers love their "NCIS," in any form. The ratings have been strong and the network is producing a backdoor spinoff pilot for this spinoff show. A full night of "NCIS" could be in CBS's future.

  • "Partners"

<strong>"Partners," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Canceled <strong>Why</strong>: Low ratings and unfavorable reviews led to the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/16/partners-canceled-cbs_n_2145832.html">early demise</a> of this CBS comedy.

  • "Person of Interest"

<strong>"Person of Interest," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Likely to be renewed <strong>Why</strong>: The series has developed a nice-sized audience, bigger than its first season.

  • "Rules of Engagement"

<strong>"Rules of Engagement," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Honestly, who knows <strong>Why</strong>: This comedy has been on the bubble since it premiered ... yet is now in its seventh season. It's too soon to look at the numbers for this season, but the show has been a midseason success for CBS in the past. However, series co-star <a href="http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/02/07/cbs-orders-comedy-pilot-starring-patrick-warburton/">Patrick Warburton is attached to star in a new pilot</a> ... for CBS.

  • "Survivor"

<strong>"Survivor," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Likely to be renewed <strong>Why</strong>: A strong player for the last 13 years, "Survivor" will likely be back. But due to its <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/14/survivor-ratings-lowest-premiere-ever_n_2687591.html">most recent premiere ratings</a>, we might not see it during the fall season, though a midseason or summer return -- with some new gimmick -- is definitely in the cards for the reality series.

  • "Two and a Half Men"

<strong>"Two and a Half Men," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Likely to be renewed <strong>Why</strong>: CBS wants another season of this bawdy hit, it's just a matter of getting its stars to sign back on.

  • "Undercover Boss"

<strong>"Undercover Boss," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Likely to be renewed <strong>Why</strong>: The show is enjoying life in syndication and its Season 4 numbers are better than most of its third season.

  • "Unforgettable"

<strong>"Unforgettable," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Uncanceled <strong>Why</strong>: CBS canceled the Poppy Montgomery drama last season ... and then revived it! Season 2 premieres Sunday, July 28.

  • "Vegas"

<strong>"Vegas," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: On the bubble <strong>Why</strong>: Despite star power, the series hasn't been a breakout hit in the ratings. CBS previously canceled "Unforgettable" (then uncanceled it) last season when it was doing about the same as "Vegas."

As Afghan trip goes badly off script, Hagel opts for caution

    By Phil Stewart

KABUL (Reuters) - It was a harrowing international debut for Chuck Hagel, whose first trip to Afghanistan as defense secretary went dramatically off-script and challenged the American narrative about the 11-year-old war.

His first full day in Afghanistan began with the sound of suicide bomb attack about a mile away from his morning meetings at a NATO facility. But the real damage came the next day when Washington's mercurial ally in the war, Afghan President Hamid Karzai, accused the United States of colluding with the Taliban hours before the two met.

Put in an awkward position, Hagel appeared cautious and at pains to avoid sharply criticizing the Afghan leader in public, even as he firmly disputed Karzai's assertions.

In private, Hagel requested and had a private one-on-one meeting with Karzai where he was "firm and direct" with the Afghan president, a U.S. official said. Hagel declined to provide reporters with details of the private exchange.

Asked about Karzai's comments, White House national security advisor Tom Donilon cited "difficult questions" surrounding the transfer of security control from the NATO-led force to Afghan soldiers.

"We've had challenges before. We've continued to work with President Karzai. But we're I think on track to meet the goals we've set for ourselves," Donilon said in response to a question after a speech in New York.

Having weathered a brutal confirmation battle last month, Hagel, a former two-term Republican senator, at one point even appeared to publicly commiserate with Karzai.

"I was once a politician," Hagel, 66, told reporters traveling with him. "So I can understand the kind of pressures - especially leaders of countries - are always under."

Hagel's more measured approach was on display as well on Saturday, when he was asked about his initial reaction to the sound of the blast from a suicide bombing at Afghanistan's nearby defense ministry, which killed nine civilians.

"We're in a war zone. I've been in war ... So (we) shouldn't be surprised when a bomb goes off or there's an explosion," he said.

There are good reasons for Hagel to be cautious. A perceived gaffe or damaging misstep after such an acrimonious confirmation process could have given Republican critics more ammunition after they questioned his war judgment. It could also complicate his efforts to wind down the war in Afghanistan.

But the Taliban bombings and Karzai's accusations were a jarring contrast to Hagel's optimistic, if tempered, comments about the war effort, which he said was "on the right path."

"You look over the past 11 years, it's pretty dramatic, what's happened in this country," Hagel told reporters on Sunday. "Yes, a ways to go. Yes, challenges. Yes, issues. Yes, differences. But I don't think any of these are challenges that we can't work our way through."

The trip failed to answer the big questions about Hagel's thinking so far about America's evolving exit strategy from the unpopular conflict, including an upcoming decision on the size of the residual force the United States will leave behind in Afghanistan once the NATO mission ends in 2014.

    SECURITY AGREEMENT

A senior defense official said Hagel was looking forward to working with other senior policy makers in Washington to "deepen our engagement with Afghan leaders, some of whom clearly have issues they want resolved." Hagel's priority, the official said, would be striking a security agreement with Afghanistan.

But it was concerns over security that forced Hagel and Karzai to cancel a joint news conference, U.S. officials said. The venue for Hagel's meeting with the Afghan defense and interior ministers was also changed.

America's first Vietnam war veteran to become defense secretary, Hagel appeared most at ease when talking to troops during a stop at a base in the eastern city of Jalalabad.

He cracked jokes and pinned Purple Heart medals on two soldiers wounded in battle. Hagel has two of the medals himself and still carries bits of shrapnel in his chest from that conflict.

Hagel, a former infantryman, joked to an Army staff sergeant that there was a time when "I was scared to death of a staff sergeant." The soldier responded: "You should be, sir." Hagel laughed.

During his trip back to the United States on Monday, Hagel stopped off in Ramstein, Germany, where he had planned to visit with wounded troops and see an Air Force general. There were no U.S. service members being treated for combat injuries at the time.

But as he landed news broke about an insider attack in Afghanistan when a person in an Afghan military uniform turned his weapon on troops at a joint base in the restive east of the country, killing two U.S. soldiers, and five Afghan army and police personnel.

Throughout his trip, Hagel assured troops he would do whatever he could to help them, even in the face of across-the-board budget cuts hitting the Pentagon and other U.S. agencies.

"I want you to also know that I will always do my best for you, for your families, our country," Hagel told the soldiers in Jalalabad. "I will always put our men and women in uniform first and do everything I can to ensure your safety or success and everything that you're entitled to."

Sprint will launch an all-touch BlackBerry phone in 2012, but not the Z10

By Joseph Ax NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City's ban on large sugary drinks from restaurants, movie theaters and other establishments was invalidated on Monday by a state judge as "arbitrary and capricious," a day before it was to take effect. The 11-hour decision was a blow to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, whose top lawyer quickly vowed to appeal. Bloomberg has made public health a cornerstone of his administration, with laws prohibiting smoking in restaurants, bars and parks; banning trans fats; and requiring chain restaurants to post calorie counts. ...

Jeb Bush Goes on Tour; Ryan's New Budget Forgets Obamacare

Speaking of potential 2016 Republican candidates, Jeb Bush refused to tell CNN's State of the Union host Candy Crowley whether or not he would run in the next Presidential election. But he also appeared on all five of the Sunday shows, so you be the judge. "Now I've decided to defer any consideration of it until the proper time to make those kind of considerations, which is out more than a year from now, for sure," the former Florida governor said. "And when I go through that process, I'll let you know. I don't know why there has to be a lot of mystery about this." Bush is also promoting a new book about one of the most polarizing issues of our time, immigration. (Nope, no 2016 bid looming here.) They also discussed Bush's apparent flip flop on whether the U.S. should have a "path to citizenship," option in immigration reform. "The right to rise ought to be the key of what we're proposing," Bush told Crowley. "It would resonate amongst all immigrant communities." The issue isn't whether the new system should have a path to citizenship -- it's how flawed the current system is, and finding a way to replace it. "The incentives that exist today are for people to come illegally because there's no path to come legally," Bush said. "We don't have a guest worker program. We have lines that are so long, in fact there are no lines. We have a lottery system where people actually put their names in. That's the reaction to our immigration system being so clogged up."

On Fox News Sunday, Bush said he didn't feel there was any "Bush baggage" holding him back from a potential run for high office. "I don't think there's any Bush baggage at all," Bush told Chris Wallace. Wallace had shown him a poll that concluded most Americans have an?unfavorable?opinion of his brother, former President George W. Bush, or his father, former President George W. Bush. "I love my brother, I'm proud of his accomplishments. I love my dad. I am proud to be a Bush," Bush said. The former Florida governor sounded pretty at peace with the idea of not running to lead the country. On the other hand, he sounded prepared to declare on the spot. "If I run for president, it's not because of something in my DNA that compels me to do it. It would be that it's the right thing to do for my family, that the conditions are right, and that I have something to offer," Bush said. "If I don't run, I have a blessed life."?

RELATED: Romney 'Is For' the Ryan Plan; Why Wisconsin Is Important

On ABC's This Week, Bush disagreed that his reintroduction to the political conversation this week has been "rocky." "I haven't found it to be rocky, but I'm not viewing this as a political reentry either. I just don't view it that way," Bush said. Like we explained above, Bush has come under fire for backing away from a path to citizenship as part of immigration reform in his new book despite the bipartisan effort in the Senate to come up with legislation?centering?around that option for undocumented workers. "The basic premise needs to be that coming to the country legally should be easier with less cost than coming to the country illegally. And if you can create a system like that as is being discussed in the Senate and in the House-- through a path to citizenship, that's fine," Bush said.

On CBS's Face the Nation, Bush defended his book from accusations it's an early form of campaigning because he started to write it last year. "Yeah, see that?s the Washington world, the world of everything has to have a personal political ambition, motive," Bush said. "This book was written last year at a time when the tenor of the debate on immigration was dramatically different than it is today," he said. "And there were a lot of people that may have believed in comprehensive reform but hadn't been supportive of it. And I'm encouraged to see that that's not the case now, that people are moving in the direction of comprehensive reform."

On NBC's Meet the Press, he said all of the things listed above while accusing host David Gregory of being a crack addict. Gregory asked who the "hottest" Florida politician is: Bush, or his much younger former protegee Marco Rubio. He also asked who had a better chance of becoming the 2016 nominee. "You guys are crack addicts," Bush said. "You really are obsessed with all this politics." Gregory laughed and took in stride. "I've been called a lot of things?" he said. "Okay, a herion addict," Bush said.

House Budget Committee Chairman?Paul Ryan?told?Fox News Sunday?host Chris Wallace some curious details about his upcoming budget proposal. Mainly, that he assumes Obamacare will be repealed. "Are you saying, as part of your budget you assume the repeal of ObamaCare?,"? "Fox News Sunday" Wallace asked Ryan on Sunday morning. "Yes," Ryan replied. "Well, that's not going to happen," Wallace concluded. With a second term and a Senate in Democratic control, a repeal of Obamacare is virtually impossible. But there are still a few Republicans who believe it could happen, and apparently Ryan counts himself among their ranks. "We believe Obamacare is a program that will not work," Ryan said. "We believe Obamacare will actually lead to hospitals and doctors and health care providers turning people away." Ryan went on to offer some details about the budget item he believes could and should replace the President's health care plan. "It's not a voucher ? it's premium support, those are very different," the Wisconsin Republican promised. "A voucher is you go to your mailbox, you get a check and you go buy something. That's not what we're saying." Ryan wants Medicare converted into a system that works "like the one I have," as a sitting congressman. "Medicare subsidizes your plan based on who you are. Total subsidy for the poor and the sick. Less of a subsidy for wealthy seniors," he said. According to Ryan, his plan will prevent Medicare from going broke. "The problem is Medicare is going broke," Ryan said. "Doing it this way -- harnessing the power of choice and competition -- where the senior gets to choose her benefit that's comprehensive is the best way to save Medicare for future generations." He also refused to confirm or deny whether he would run for President in 2016.?

We're two weeks from the need for a spending bill to be passed or the government shuts down, but count house minority leader Nancy Pelosi among those promising a government shut down is off the table. "We certainly are not going to have the government shut down,"?the former speaker said on State of the Union. "When we weigh the equities of the value of the bill the Senate has, it's almost impossible for it not to be a better bill than what is written by the House Republicans. But they will have to send a bipartisan bill in order to get the 60 votes. And I'm sure it will be stronger." It all depends on the details, though. Pelosi promises the shut down won't happen so long as, you know, everyone is reasonable. "Again, depending on what it is, and how many Republican votes it has, I've said very clearly: the Democrats will not allow government to shut down," Pelosi said.

Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz accused Republicans of rooting for the economy to do poorly for their own political gain on ABC's This Week. She was sitting on a panel with Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson. "Our friends on the other side of the aisle, unfortunately ? like the senator ? continue to root for our economy to not be doing as well," Wasserman Schultz said. "We've had 37 straight months of job growth in the private sector. Four of the last five months have been 200,000 plus jobs a month," she said. "Absolutely not. That is false," Johnson shot back. Wasserman Schultz said, surprisingly, the issues between the two parties stem from a lack of communication. (Not name calling or accusing? Hm.) "There is a trust deficit between the two sides," she said. "The way that you close that trust gap is that you sit down and continue to talk."

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg sees himself as the counterweight to the National Rifle Association in the fight for gun rights reform in Washington. "Because up until now it has only been the NRA that has been talking about guns to the public, and to Congress," Bloomberg said on Face the Nation. "And I'm trying to level the playing field and bring out the facts." Bloomberg sees himself as the only person putting up a fight against their lobbying powers on the Hill. "And up until now it's only been the NRA -- they've had the field to themselves. And what I'm trying to do is to explain to the public what the issues are and then let the public decide. And there are a lot of other people that want to join in this fight and give an alternative to the NRA," Bloomberg said. And the Mayor seems to think that reform efforts in Washington aren't totally dead in the water. "Well I really think that things in Washington are going better than anybody... understands," Bloomberg said. "The Judiciary Committee just took up gun legislation the other day. It starts the process. Federal government doesn't overnight do things, and probably shouldn't write laws that quickly." He's not letting the background checks discussion that died in the Senate last week get him down. "The president and vice president are committed here," he said. "There's an awful lot of momentum among both Republican and Democratic, rural and urban and suburban congressmen and senators, and red states and blue states to do something that will protect the public."

Oklahoma's Sen. Tom Coburn told Meet the Press host David Gregory the dinner he had with the President this week was a good first step to healing their relationship. "I think he gets it," Coburn said. "I think he's genuinely reaching out." Obama dined with a group of Republican senators last week in an effort to get everyone to come together a little bit. With a little food, a little wine, and some good conversation... who knows what could happen? Things are on the right track, Coburn says, but they aren't totally infatuated with the President just yet. ?"But you've got a lot scabs and sores on people that's going to take a while for that to heal," Coburn told host David Gregory. Coburn pointed to the heads of both parties as the reason the Senate's portrayed as dysfunctional. "The Senate's not nearly as dysfunctional as it's made out to be," Coburn said. "Our problem in the Senate is the leadership in the Senate, not the members in the Senate." That's pointed directly at you, Mr. Harry Reid and Mr. Mitch McConnell.?

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? On the eve of their conclave to select a new pope, cardinals held their final debate Monday over whether the Catholic Church needs a manager to clean up the Vatican or a pastor to inspire the faithful at a time of crisis.

The countdown underway, speculation has gone into overdrive about who's ahead in the papal campaign.

Will cardinals choose Cardinal Angelo Scola, the archbishop of Milan, an Italian with serious intellectual and managerial chops who hasn't been tainted by the scandals of the Vatican bureaucracy?

Or has Cardinal Sean O'Malley, the Capuchin monk from Boston who has charmed the Italian media worked the same magic on fellow cardinals?

Most cardinals already knew Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet since he heads a powerful Vatican office. But maybe over the past week they've gotten a chance to hear him sing ? he has a fabulous voice and is known for belting out French folk songs.

Whoever it is, there were strong indications that plenty of questions remained about the state of the church and the best man to lead it heading into Tuesday's conclave: Not all the cardinals who wanted to speak were able to Monday, and the cardinals were forced to take a vote about continuing the discussion into the afternoon.

In the end, a majority of cardinals chose to cut short the formal discussion, and the cardinals who did speak shortened their comments, according to the Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi.

"This is a great historical moment but we have got to do it properly, and I think that's why there isn't a real rush to get into things," Cardinal Wilfrid Fox Napier from South Africa said as he left the session.

Cardinal Javier Luis Err?zuriz of Chile was more blunt, saying that while Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger had tremendous support going into the 2005 conclave that elected him Benedict XVI after just four ballots, the same can't be said for any of the candidates in this election.

"This time around, there are many different candidates, so it's normal that it's going to take longer than the last time," he told The Associated Press.

One of the main presentations Monday came from Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican No. 2 who heads the commission of cardinals overseeing the scandal-marred Vatican bank. He outlined the bank's activities and the Holy See's efforts to clean up its reputation in international financial circles, Lombardi said.

The Holy See's finances, and particularly the work of the Vatican bank have been under the spotlight during these pre-conclave meetings as cardinals seek to investigate allegations of corruption in the Vatican administration and get to the bottom of the bank's long history of scandal and secrecy.

There's no clear front-runner for a job most cardinals say they would never want, but a handful of names are circulating as top candidates to lead the 1.2 billion-strong church at a critical time in its history.

Scola is affable and Italian, but not from the Italian-centric Vatican bureaucracy. That makes him attractive perhaps to those seeking reform of the nerve center of the Catholic Church, which was exposed as corrupt and full of petty turf battles by the leaks of papal documents last year.

Brazilian Cardinal Odilo Scherer seems to be favored by some Latin Americans and the Vatican Curia, or bureaucracy. Scherer has a solid handle on the Vatican's finances, sitting on the governing commission of the Vatican bank, the Institute for Religious Works, as well as the Holy See's main budget committee.

As a non-Italian, the archbishop of Sao Paolo would be expected to name an Italian insider as secretary of state ? the Vatican No. 2 who runs day-to-day affairs at the Holy See ? another plus for Vatican-based cardinals who would want one of their own running the shop.

The pastoral camp seems to be focusing on two Americans, Cardinals Timothy Dolan of New York and O'Malley. Neither has Vatican experience, though Dolan served in the 1990s as rector of the Pontifical North American College, the U.S. seminary up the hill from the Vatican. He has admitted his Italian isn't strong ? perhaps a handicap for a job in which the lingua franca of day-to-day administration is Italian and the pope's other role as bishop of Rome.

If the leading names fail to reach the 77 votes required for victory in the first few rounds of balloting, any number of surprise names could come to the fore as alternatives.

Those include Cardinal Luis Tagle, archbishop of Manila. He is young ? at age 55 the second-youngest cardinal voting ? and was only named a cardinal last November. While his management skills haven't been tested in Rome, Tagle ? with a Chinese-born mother ? is seen as the face of the church in Asia, where Catholicism is growing.

Whoever it is, the new pope will face a church in crisis: Benedict XVI spent his eight-year pontificate trying to revive Catholicism from the secular trends which have made it almost irrelevant in places like Europe, once a stronghold of Christianity. Clerical sex abuse scandals have soured many faithful on their church, and competition from rival evangelical churches in Latin America and Africa has drawn souls away.

Tuesday begins with the cardinals checking into the Vatican's Domus Sanctae Martae, a modern, industrial-feel hotel on the edge of the Vatican gardens. While the rooms are impersonal, they're a step up from the cramped conditions cardinals faced before the hotel was first put to use in 2005; in conclaves past, lines in the Apostolic Palace used to form for using bathrooms.

Tuesday morning, the dean of the College of Cardinals, Angelo Sodano, leads the celebration of the "Pro eligendo Pontificie" Mass ? the Mass for the election of a pope ? inside St. Peter's Basilica, joined by the 115 cardinals who will vote.

They break for lunch at the hotel, and return for the 4:30 p.m. procession into the Sistine Chapel, chanting the Litany of Saints, the hypnotic Gregorian chant imploring the intercession of the saints to help guide the voting. They then take their oath of secrecy and listen to a meditation by elderly Maltese Cardinal Prosper Grech.

While the cardinals are widely expected to cast the first ballot Tuesday afternoon, technically they don't have to. In conclaves past, the cardinals have always voted on the first day.

The first puffs of smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney should emerge sometime around 8 p.m. Black smoke from the burned ballot papers means no pope. White smoke means the 266th pope has been chosen.

    Bring Turkey to the Table with Top Chop Market {Recipe + Giveaway}

TopChopMarket_logo I?ll admit that cooking isn?t my favorite past time. My husband is the chef in the family but I do try to surprise him once in a while with a meal ready and on the table when he gets home from work. Cutting poultry is one of those tasks that makes my skin crawl so when my husband came home to this meal he assumed the turkey was pre-cut. HA! Yes sweetie, I made it all on my own. It?s nothing fancy but I wanted to try the new Top Chop Market gourmet free-range turkey combo box.

    TopChopMarket2

The Butter Garlic Turkey Breast caught my eye first. The premium cut was incredibly lean. I didn?t have to remove anything from the meat. The turkey breasts were pre seasoned so I didn?t ad anything additional. I browned the turkey with a little bit of olive oil, then added fresh cut mushrooms, green and red peppers, and onion. After letting the veggies cook I layered the mixture with cheese and sour cream onto a tortilla. We enjoyed fresh, simple turkey fajitas for dinner. My husband and I both enjoyed the turkey but felt the seasoning could have been stronger. We also agreed that we still enjoyed this product and love the fact that Top Chop Market sells free-range turkey and can shop with confidence with their 100% guarantee:

We are so confident you will love our products that we guarantee them. Buy with peace of mind, if for any reason you are dissatisfied with the product let us know and we will replace your order or return your money.

    TopChopMarketSausage2

We also tried one of the cooked turkey sausages from the Top Chop Market combo box (they offer both cooked and uncooked options). My husband makes an amazing sausage chowder. He typically uses a kielbasa sausage but the smoked sausage with cheddar cheese sounded like a great alternative.

    Amazing Sausage Chowder

    Recipe Type:?Main Dish

    ?

    Ingredients

    • 5 pounds potatoes
    • 1 kielbasa sausage (14 oz) or your other favorite sausage
    • can creamed corn
    • can whole kernel corn
    • can cream of mushroom soup

    Instructions

    1. Cut and peel potatoes and boil in a large pot of water (add enough water to cover potatoes). Once the potatoes are cooked, add creamed corn, whole kernel corn, and cream of mushroom soup. Heat and slice the cooked sausage and add to the soup. Serve and enjoy!

    3.1.09

This soup is great on a cold winter day and has become a family favorite. We loved the Top Chop turkey sausage.

The only negative we could come up with for this product is the price. I?m not sure how prices compare for other free-range products but we weren?t sure we?d spend $65.99 + S&H on the combo box. With that said I did purchase our local chicken at the deli window today instead of the pre-packaged big name brand and was willing to pay the extra cost to get a more natural product.

    BUY IT:

You can purchase a variety of Top Chop Market free-range gourmet turkey products online at?www.topchopmarket.com.

    The AP adds:

"Maduro says the president will lie in state first for at least another seven days.

"A state funeral for Ch?vez attended by some 33 heads of government is scheduled to begin Friday morning. Tens of thousands have already filed past his glass-topped casket at a military academy following a seven-hour procession on Tuesday which took his body from the hospital where he died."

(AP) ? Kenya's election commission accepted responsibility on Wednesday for the failure of an electronic vote counting system that has left the country in an electoral limbo, while a leading presidential candidate accused Britain's high commissioner of meddling in the crucial election.

The election commission said that the final results of Monday's presidential election should be released Friday. Officials began transporting the tally sheets from voting locations to the capital to begin a count of the vote, the country's first since its 2007 election led to massive tribal violence that killed more than 1,000 people.

The coalition of Deputy Prime Minster Uhuru Kenyatta ? the candidate who faces charges at the International Criminal Court and is the son of Kenya's founding president ? accused the British high commissioner of "shadowy, suspicious and rather animated involvement" in efforts to get the election commission to decide that rejected ballots should still be counted in the overall vote total.

Kenyatta's party also asked the high commissioner, Christian Turner, to explain what it called "the sudden upsurge of British military personnel" in Kenya. British troops attend a six-week training course near Mount Kenya before deploying to Afghanistan. A new battle group arrived the week before Kenyans voted.

Britain's Foreign Office said claims of British interference "are entirely false and misleading." It said the British soldiers in Kenya are part of a regular training program planned nine months ago "completely unrelated to the Kenyan elections." It said Britain has no position on the rejected votes, saying that the election commission or the courts should decide.

"We have always said that this election is a choice for Kenyans alone to decide," the Foreign Office said, adding: "We urge all sides to ensure calm, avoid inflammatory statements, and to take any disputes to the courts."

Kenyatta and Prime Minister Raila Odinga are the top two contenders.

Kenyans grew increasingly frustrated that the announcements of public vote tallies stopped close to 48 hours after polls closed. The breakdown of the electronic vote system has meant that less than half of preliminary results were released. Officials ? who have been working to ensure violence doesn't break out this election ? are calling for patience.

"The delay is giving rise to conspiracy theories. People are panicking about the delay in the results of the elections. But unlike last election there is a level of restraint," said Kevin Muriunge, a 25-year-old student.

In an example of rising agitation, youths in the city of Garissa, near the Somali border, gathered near the vote tallying center and began rioting, drawing a response from police, who opened fire. One teenager was killed, said Musa Mohamed, a doctor at the Garissa hospital.

William Ruto, Kenyatta's running mate, urged the electoral commission to speed up the release of results.

"As we are all aware, the country is at a standstill at the moment," Ruto said.

At an evening news conference, the election commission chair, Ahmed Issack Hassan, tried to assure the country that all votes cast would be reflected in the final result. He urged any candidates to take any objections they have to court.

Referring to long voting lines during Monday's vote, Alojz Peterle, a former president of Slovenia and the chief observer in the European Union observer mission, said Kenyans have demonstrated they are capable of great patience.

"But even more patience is called for now," he added.

The election commission chairman announced late Tuesday that hundreds of thousands of ballots that were rejected for not following the rules would be counted in the overall vote total. That makes it very difficult, given the tight race, for either top candidate to reach the 50 percent mark needed to win outright.

Election observers from around the world said Wednesday that Kenya carried out a credible election, but the groups reserved final judgments until the process is completed. Some observers said a runoff between Odinga and Kenyatta is likely.

The partial preliminary results on Tuesday had shown an early lead for Kenyatta. Odinga's camp told supporters that the votes from his strongholds had not yet all been tallied.

The statement from Kenyatta's coalition Wednesday implied that the British high commissioner pressured the commission to make the decision on the spoiled ballots, thus ensuring a runoff.

John Stremlau, an election observer with The Carter Center, the body run by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, said it might be better for Kenyatta's coalition to use "foreign powers" as a whipping post than attacking Kenyans.

"It does seem to me to be a mindset of the old colonial era that the foreign powers would be dictating to the (election commission) in any way," Stremlau said, adding later: "There are going to be accusations in every election ... and they must be backed by evidence. Show the proof and let the judges decide and we'll all be better off."

Franklin Bett, an official in Odinga's party, echoed that statement. "Talk is easy. Let them come with the evidence."

Kenya is the lynchpin of East Africa's economy and plays a vital security role in the fight against Somali militants. The U.S. Embassy in Kenya is the largest in Africa, indicating this country's importance to U.S. foreign policy.

The U.S. has warned of "consequences" if Kenyatta is to win, as have several European countries, because Kenyatta is an ICC indictee.

Aisha Abdullahi, an African Union official, said it was good that Kenya had planned for a backup system ? the physical vote tallies ? given the breakdown in the electronic transmission system. He blamed the break-down on a failure of central computer servers.

"Yes, we in Africa are trying to catch up with you guys with electronic things," said Festus Mogae in response to a question from a European reporter. Mogae is a former president of Botswana and head of the Commonwealth observer mission.

"That it's failed is no surprise to me. It often does in our countries."
