Choose a fixie bike for extra exercise

If you have decided to change your lifestyle a little and take up some extra exercise, one of the best ways to get fit and healthy is to start cycling. Whether you would like to begin cycling to work or you would prefer to go on longer bike riding trips with the whole family on the weekends, you should look into getting a fixie bike in order to reap the additional benefits that these bikes can bring.

The term 'fixie' means fixed gear and refers to the fact that these bikes have no gears on them. There is no free wheel on fixie bikes so you can't coast like you can on other bikes, such as mountain bikes and hybrid bikes. Because of this you will be constantly pedalling when on a fixie bike, which can allow you to achieve faster speeds and will also give you a better connection with the road, as you will have maximum control over your bike riding. This is a plus for many cyclists and it can actually offer up increased safety in wet conditions - you will be able to feel the grip of the rear tyre on the road's surface a lot more.

A lot of people choose fixie bikes over other styles because of the way they look - they have a very clean and retro appearance thanks to the lack of gears, and you can get them in a range of colours to suit all tastes. Another reason why fixie bikes have become so popular is that they are incredibly easy to maintain, so if you are a novice bike rider or you just don't want to have to carry out too much maintenance they would be perfect for you. There are fewer moving parts on fixe bikes, but you will still need to check the brakes and tyres regularly.

When you first get your fixie bike you will probably need a bit of practice before going out on the roads with one, as they can be quite different from riding other bike styles. You will need to get out of the habit of trying to coast once you get up to a certain speed, but after a few weeks of practice you should feel confident about riding your fixie bike.

As you gain experience in riding a fixie bike your muscles will become more developed due to the constant pedalling, and you should also notice that your stamina for long bike rides increases, allowing you to enjoy cycling a lot more.
